How to Install the K151SP Straight Plug

This guide details the installation of the K151SP Straight Plug, covering cable preparation, conductor crimping, and connection to mating Elastimold products for 15kV and 25kV class systems. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before starting.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Rag, Approved solvent

Supplies needed:

K151SP Straight Plug, Conductor Contact (female), Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant (supplied), Cable (solid dielectric type), Mating Elastimold receptacle, ELASTIMOLD bail, Silicone grease, Copper wire (#14 AWG or equivalent), Sealing material, Inhibitor

  1. Prepare Cable Jacket

De-energize all apparatus. For jacketed concentric neutral cables, cut and remove 8 inches of the cable jacket from the end, ensuring sufficient neutral wires for grounding. For copper tape shield cables, cut and remove 7-1/2 inches of the cable jacket, then remove 6-1/2 inches of the copper tape shield from the cable end. Follow specific instructions for ECS or MA grounding devices if applicable.

  2. Strip Insulation and Clean Conductor

Remove 7/8 inch to 1 inch of cable insulation and conductive shield, cutting squarely without penciling. For #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid aluminum cable, remove 1-3/4 inches to 1-7/8 inches. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and insert them into the crimp barrel containing inhibitor.

  3. Crimp Conductor Contact

Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, holding the crimp barrel against the cable insulation. Refer to the crimp chart. Start crimps at the crimp line imprinted on the barrel and rotate each successive crimp 90 degrees. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.

  4. Clean and Pencil Insulation

Temporarily remove the plastic pin. Remove the semi-conductive shield 7-3/4 inches to 7-13/16 inches back from the end of the socket with a straight, smooth, squared cut; do not cut or nick the insulation. Replace the plastic pin. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation with an approved solvent, wiping from the cable end toward the outer jacket. Install an ECS or MA grounding device if applicable.

  5. Lubricate Cable and Plug Housing

Slide the collar, smaller end first, onto each cable. Keep the cable insulation and plug clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as shown and to the inside of the housing. Do not substitute other lubricants, as they may be harmful to the product.

  6. Attach Plug to Cable

Push the cable into the housing until the leading edge of the socket contact is flush with the front edge of the plug. Remove the plastic pin from the socket and discard it.

  7. Connect to Mating Receptacle

Lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1-3/4 inches), ensuring the rod is not cut. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection with an ELASTIMOLD bail, referencing the Bailing Instruction Sheet (150TB-4).

  8. Connect System Ground

If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not used, connect a customer-supplied length of #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect this grounding assembly to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
