This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing Thomas & Betts FLOOD-SEAL 95 Heat Shrink Connector Kits, including preparing the cable, crimping the lug, and properly shrinking the sleeve. WARNING: Installation must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable electrical codes, standards, and safety rules to prevent electric shock.
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Wrench or Socket, Butane torch, Propane torch, 500°F electric heat gun
Supplies needed:
Heat shrink sleeve, Connector lug, Cable
- Prepare the Cable
Remove the insulation from the cable end and thoroughly wire brush the conductor to ensure a clean connection surface.
- Position Heat Shrink Sleeve
Slip the heat shrink sleeve over the prepared cable end, ensuring it is positioned far enough back to allow for lug crimping.
- Crimp and Connect Lug
Crimp the lug securely onto the conductor end. Wipe away any excess joint compound. Bolt the lug firmly to the contact pad on the FLOOD SEAL connector bus.
- Position Sleeve over Lug
Slide the heat shrink sleeve forward over the crimped lug until it butts firmly against the connector bus.
- Shrink Sleeve at Bus End
Apply heat evenly to the sleeve at the bus end. Continue shrinking until a bead of mastic appears at the sleeve end, indicating a complete seal.
- Shrink Sleeve over Terminal Lug
Working away from the connector bus, apply heat evenly to shrink the sleeve over the terminal lug section.
- Shrink Sleeve over Cable End
Continue applying heat evenly to shrink the sleeve over the cable end. A complete seal is achieved when a bead of mastic appears at this end.
