This guide provides step-by-step instructions for trained installers to properly install Thomas & Betts FLOOD-SEAL 95 Heat Shrink Connector Kits, covering cable preparation, lug crimping, and heat shrinking for a secure, sealed electrical connection in accordance with safety rules and electrical codes.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Crimping tool, Wrench or socket, Butane torch, Propane torch, 500°F electric heat gun
Supplies needed:
Heat shrink sleeve, Connector lug, Electrical cable, Electrical joint compound
- Prepare Cable and Conductor
Remove the cable insulation to the appropriate length and thoroughly wire brush the conductor to ensure a clean connection surface.
- Position Heat Shrink Sleeve
Slip the heat shrink sleeve over the cable end, ensuring it is positioned far enough back on the cable to allow for the crimping and bolting steps.
- Crimp and Bolt Lug
Crimp the lug securely onto the prepared conductor end. Wipe away any excess joint compound. Bolt the lug firmly to the contact pad on the FLOOD SEAL connector bus.
- Position Sleeve Over Lug
Slip the heat shrink sleeve forward over the crimped lug until it butts against the FLOOD SEAL connector bus.
- Shrink Sleeve at Bus End
Apply heat evenly to the sleeve at the bus end using a suitable heat source (butane torch, propane torch, or 500°F electric heat gun). Move the heat source to a new position as visual shrinkage occurs. The seal is complete when a bead of mastic appears at the sleeve end.
- Shrink Sleeve Over Terminal Lug
Working away from the connector bus, continue to apply heat evenly to shrink the sleeve over the terminal lug until it is fully conformed and sealed.
- Shrink Sleeve Over Cable End
Complete the process by shrinking the sleeve over the cable end. Apply heat evenly until a bead of mastic appears, indicating a complete and secure seal.
