Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Crimping tool, Butane torch, Propane torch, 500°F electric heat gun
Supplies needed:
Cable, Heat shrink sleeve, Connector lug, Joint compound
- Prepare the Cable Conductor
Remove the appropriate length of insulation from the cable end. Thoroughly wire brush the exposed conductor to ensure a clean surface.
- Position the Heat Shrink Sleeve
Slide the heat shrink sleeve over the prepared cable end, ensuring it is positioned away from the conductor end where the lug will be crimped.
- Crimp and Connect the Lug
Crimp the connector lug securely onto the prepared conductor end. Wipe away any excess joint compound. Bolt the crimped lug to the contact pad on the FLOOD-SEAL connector bus.
- Position Sleeve over Lug and Bus
Slide the heat shrink sleeve over the crimped lug until it firmly butts against the FLOOD-SEAL connector bus.
- Shrink Sleeve at Bus End
Using an approved heat source (butane torch, propane torch, or 500°F electric heat gun; do not use acetylene), begin shrinking the sleeve at the connector bus end. Apply heat evenly and move the torch as visual shrinkage occurs. Continue until a bead of mastic appears at the sleeve's edge, indicating a complete seal.
- Shrink Sleeve over Terminal Lug
Continue applying heat, working away from the connector bus, to shrink the sleeve tightly over the terminal lug.
- Shrink Sleeve over Cable End
Finally, shrink the sleeve over the cable end. The seal is complete when a bead of mastic appears at the cable end of the sleeve.
