This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing Thomas & Betts FLOOD-SEAL 95 heat shrink connector kits, including preparing the cable, crimping the lug, and properly shrinking the sleeve for a secure seal. WARNING: Installation must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable local, state, and national electrical codes, installation standards, and safety rules to prevent electric shock.
Estimated time: 45m
Tools needed:
Cable stripper, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Butane torch or Propane torch or 500°F electric heat gun
Supplies needed:
FLOOD-SEAL 95 Heat Shrink Connector Kit, Electrical cable, Terminal lug (if not included in kit), Joint compound (if not pre-applied), Bolts and nuts (for lug connection)
- Prepare Cable Conductor
Remove the appropriate length of cable insulation from the conductor end. Thoroughly wire brush the exposed conductor to ensure a clean surface for connection.
- Position Heat Shrink Sleeve
Carefully slip the heat shrink sleeve, provided in the kit, over the prepared cable end. Ensure it is positioned far enough back to allow for lug crimping.
- Crimp and Bolt Terminal Lug
Crimp the terminal lug onto the conductor end using the appropriate crimping tool. If applicable, wipe away any excess joint compound. Bolt the crimped lug securely to the contact pad on the FLOOD SEAL connector bus.
- Position Sleeve over Lug
Slide the heat shrink sleeve forward over the crimped lug until it firmly butts against the connector bus. Ensure there are no gaps between the sleeve and the bus.
- Shrink Sleeve at Bus End
Apply heat evenly to the sleeve at the bus end using a butane torch, propane torch, or 500°F electric heat gun. Move the heat source constantly as visual shrinkage occurs. The seal is complete when a bead of mastic appears at the sleeve end, indicating proper adhesion.
- Shrink Sleeve over Terminal Lug
Continue applying heat, working away from the connector bus, to shrink the sleeve over the entire terminal lug. Ensure even shrinkage around the lug for a tight seal.
- Shrink Sleeve over Cable End
Finally, apply heat to shrink the sleeve over the cable end, ensuring it fully encapsulates the transition from the lug to the cable insulation. A complete seal is indicated when a bead of mastic appears at the cable end of the sleeve.
