This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing Thomas & Betts FLOOD-SEAL 95 Heat Shrink Connector Kits, ensuring a secure and sealed electrical connection. Installation must be performed by trained installers following all applicable electrical codes and safety rules to prevent electric shock.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Butane torch, Propane torch, 500°F electric heat gun, Crimping tool, Wire brush, Wrench/Socket set
Supplies needed:
Heat shrink sleeve, Electrical lug, Joint compound, Cable, FLOOD-SEAL connector bus
- Prepare the Conductor
Remove the cable insulation to expose the conductor. Thoroughly wire brush the conductor to ensure a clean surface for connection. Ensure proper insulation removal length as per lug specifications.
- Position Heat Shrink Sleeve
Slip the heat shrink sleeve over the cable end, ensuring it is positioned far enough back on the cable to allow for lug crimping and connection without obstruction.
- Connect Lug to Conductor and Bus
Crimp the lug securely onto the prepared conductor end using an appropriate crimping tool. Wipe away any excess joint compound from the connection area. Bolt the lug firmly to the contact pad on the FLOOD-SEAL connector bus, ensuring a tight and secure electrical connection.
- Position Sleeve Over Lug
Slide the heat shrink sleeve forward over the crimped lug until it butts firmly against the connector bus, completely covering the lug and the connection point.
- Shrink Sleeve at Bus End
Using a suitable heat source (butane torch, propane torch, or 500°F electric heat gun), apply heat evenly to the sleeve at the bus end. Move the heat source continuously to prevent scorching. Continue shrinking until a bead of mastic appears at the sleeve end, indicating a complete and watertight seal.
- Shrink Sleeve Over Terminal Lug
Working away from the connector bus, continue to apply heat evenly to shrink the sleeve over the terminal lug. Ensure the sleeve conforms tightly to the lug's shape, creating a secure and sealed covering.
- Shrink Sleeve Over Cable End
Finally, apply heat evenly to shrink the sleeve over the cable end, extending beyond the original insulation cut. The seal is complete when a bead of mastic appears at the cable end, ensuring a watertight and secure connection along the entire length of the sleeve.
