- Disconnect Power and Review Safety
WARNING: Risk of shock, disconnect all power to the circuit before beginning installation. Ensure the product is installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes. Read and understand all instructions and safety information before use.
- Verify Cable and Splice Compatibility
Check the wire size marked on the aluminum splice to confirm it is the correct connector for the actual cable size to be used. Ensure the splice is rated for the specific aluminum or copper cable.
- Strip Cable Insulation
Carefully strip the insulation from the cable, taking extreme care not to nick or damage the cable strands. Refer to the splice specifications for the correct strip length.
- Wire Brush Cable Strands
Thoroughly wire brush the cable strands that will be inserted into the connector. This removes any oxidation and ensures optimal electrical contact. Use a wire brush (e.g., ABB catalog number WWB1).
- Insert Cable into Splice
Fully insert the prepared cable into the splice barrel. Ensure the cable is seated completely and makes firm contact with the internal oxide inhibitor. WARNING: Do not remove the oxide inhibitor from the splice barrel; insufficient compound can result in an unsafe connection.
- Crimp the Splice
Consult the 'Tool and Die Index' provided with the product to select the correct crimping tool and die combination for your cable size. Crimp the connector the specified number of times, spacing crimps uniformly along the splice. For splices, make the first crimp just outside the knurl on each side of the center.
- Clean Excess Oxide Inhibitor
After crimping, wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor from the exterior of the splice. Avoid prolonged skin contact with the compound (wash with soap and water). Consult a physician if swallowed or contact with eyes.
