How to Install ASP AL9CU Aluminum Compression Splices

This guide provides instructions for installing ASP AL9CU aluminum compression splices for stranded, compressed, compact aluminum and copper cables, ensuring a secure and safe electrical connection.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Wire brush (ABB catalog WWB1), Crimping tool (refer to Tool and Die Index for specific model)

Supplies needed:

ASP AL9CU aluminum compression splice, Aluminum or copper stranded cable

  1. Prepare for Installation and Verify Components

WARNING: Risk of shock, disconnect all power before beginning installation. CAUTION: This product should be installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes. Verify the wire size marked on the aluminum splice to ensure it is the correct connector for the actual cable size to be used.

  2. Prepare the Cable for Connection

Carefully strip the cable insulation to the appropriate length, taking extreme care not to nick or damage the cable strands. Using a wire brush (reference ABB catalog number WWB1), thoroughly brush the cable side that will be inserted into the connector to ensure optimal contact.

  3. Insert Cable and Crimp the Splice

Fully insert the prepared cable into the connector barrel. WARNING: Do not remove the oxide inhibitor from the splice barrel; insufficient compound can result in an unsafe connection. Refer to the 'Tool and Die Index' section of the documentation to select the correct crimping tool and die combination for your specific cable size. Crimp the connector the number of times shown on the chart for the chosen tool/die combination, spacing crimps uniformly along the splice, making the first crimp just outside the knurl on each side of the center. After crimping, wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor from the splice.
