How to Install ASP AL9CU Compression Splices

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing ASP AL9CU aluminum compression splices for stranded, compressed, compact aluminum and copper cables. WARNING: Do not remove the oxide inhibitor from inside the splice barrel; insufficient compound can result in an unsafe connection. Installation should be performed by a qualified electrician with power disconnected.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Wire brush (e.g., ABB catalog number WWB1), Crimping tool, Dies (specific to cable size and tool)

Supplies needed:

ASP AL9CU aluminum splice, Aluminum or copper cable

  1. Verify Wire and Splice Size

Check the wire size marked on the aluminum splice to ensure it is the correct connector for the actual cable size to be used. NOTE: Use maximum cable for connector selection.

  2. Strip Cable Insulation

Strip the cable insulation, taking care not to nick the cable strands.

  3. Wire Brush Cable

Wire brush the cable side which will be inserted into the connector using a suitable wire brush (e.g., ABB catalog number WWB1).

  4. Fully Insert Cable

Fully insert the prepared cable into the connector until it bottoms out.

  5. Crimp the Connector

Refer to the Tool and Die Index. Select one of the tool/die combinations listed for the cable size; crimp the connector the number of times shown on the chart for the selected tool/die combination. For splices, make the first crimp just outside the knurl on each side of the center and space crimps uniformly along the splice.

  6. Clean Excess Inhibitor

Wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor from the exterior of the splice, ensuring the compound remains inside the barrel for a safe connection.
