How to Install ASP AL9CU Compression Splices

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing aluminum type ASP AL9CU compression splices for stranded, compressed, compact aluminum and copper cables. Installation should be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes.

Estimated time: 15m

Tools needed:

Wire brush, Crimping tool, Crimping dies

Supplies needed:

ASP AL9CU Compression Splice, Electrical cable

  1. Disconnect Power

WARNING: Before beginning any installation, ensure that all power to the circuit is disconnected to prevent the risk of electrical shock. Verify power is off using appropriate testing equipment.

  2. Verify Wire Size

Check the wire size marked on the aluminum splice to ensure it is the correct connector for the actual cable size to be used. Refer to the product selection chart for compatibility.

  3. Strip Cable Insulation

Carefully strip the cable insulation to the appropriate length, ensuring not to nick or damage the cable strands. The stripped length should match the depth of the splice barrel.

  4. Brush Cable Strands

Wire brush the cable strands that will be inserted into the connector to ensure a clean and secure connection. WARNING: Do not remove the oxide inhibitor from the splice barrel, as insufficient compound can result in an unsafe connection.

  5. Insert Cable into Splice

Fully insert the prepared cable into the connector barrel. Ensure the cable is seated completely against the stop or to the specified depth.

  6. Crimp the Splice

Consult the 'Tool and Die Index' to select the appropriate crimping tool and die combination for your cable size. Crimp the connector the specified number of times. For splices, make the first crimp just outside the knurl on each side of the center, then space subsequent crimps uniformly along the splice. Ensure all crimps are firm and secure.

  7. Clean Excess Inhibitor

Wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor compound from the exterior of the crimped splice. WARNING: This compound contains petroleum distillates and small metal particles. Avoid prolonged skin contact; wash with soap and water immediately if contact occurs. Consult a physician if swallowed or contact with eyes.
