How to Install ASP AL9CU Compression Splices

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and correct installation of ASP AL9CU aluminum compression splices for stranded aluminum and copper cables.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Wire brush (e.g., ABB WWB1), Crimping tool (hydraulic or mechanical), Appropriate die set

Supplies needed:

ASP AL9CU aluminum compression splice, Aluminum or copper stranded cable, Soap and water (for cleanup)

  1. Ensure Safety and Verify Components

Disconnect all power before beginning installation to prevent electrical shock. Ensure a qualified electrician performs the installation, adhering to all national and local electrical codes. Verify that the wire size marked on the aluminum splice matches the actual cable size you intend to use.

  2. Prepare the Cable

Carefully strip the insulation from the cable, ensuring not to nick or damage the cable strands during this process. Using a wire brush (e.g., ABB catalog number WWB1), thoroughly brush the cable side that will be inserted into the connector. Do not remove the oxide inhibitor from inside the splice barrel.

  3. Insert and Crimp the Splice

Fully insert the prepared cable into the compression splice. Consult the Tool and Die Index to select the correct crimping tool and die combination for your specific cable size. Crimp the connector the number of times indicated in the chart. For splices, make the first crimp just outside the knurl on each side of the center, then space subsequent crimps uniformly along the splice barrel. After crimping, wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor. If the compound contacts skin, wash immediately with soap and water.
