How to Install 655/656/675/676CETP Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation, cable preparation, and connection of 655/656/675/676CETP Deadbreak Elbow Connectors to high voltage apparatus, including grounding and voltage testing.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Torque wrench, 600AT assembly tool (or 600ATM assembly tool), Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points), Wire brush (for aluminum conductors), Suitable connector (for grounding wire)
Supplies needed:
Elbow (655/656/675/676CETP), Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Lubricant (supplied with product), Vinyl Plastic Tape, Tape marker (various types depending on shield), Tape retainer (for fabric tape shield), 10TL cable shield adapter (if needed for UNISHIELD® or lead sheath cable), No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent) for grounding, Silicone grease (for test point cap), DR(G), ESA, GLR, or LR (mating loadbreak products, if applicable), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers)
- Prepare for Installation and Position Cable
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus are de-energized during installation. Inspect package contents and all components for damage, rating, and compatibility. Position the cable in its final assembled position with enough slack to provide adequate clearance for removing the elbows. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4” (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product.
- Clean and Prepare Cable Outer Jacket and Shield
Clean the outer surface of the cable for 24” (610mm) or up to the bent back concentric neutral wires. Remove the outer jacket to the specified dimension. Fold back shield wires. Depending on the cable shield type (e.g., flat metallic tape, fabric tape, longitudinally corrugated, semi-con), follow specific instructions for shield removal and installation of tape markers or shield adapters (e.g., 10TL for UNISHIELD® or lead sheath cable). Do not cut or nick the cable insulation.
- Prepare Cable Insulation and Conductor
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4” (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and lubricate the cable insulation (lubricant supplied), always working toward the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker. Remove the protruding cable insulation even with the end of the cable adapter. Verify the exposed conductor length is 4 3/8”–4 11/16” (111mm–119mm). Do not cut or nick the cable adapter or conductor.
- Crimp the Compression Lug
For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor and immediately fully insert it. Measure the 'Check Dimension' (must be less than 6 1/2” (165mm)) before crimping. Crimp the compression lug according to its supplied crimping instructions. Wipe all excess inhibitor from the compression lug and cable adapter surface after crimping. Verify the distance from the end of the compression lug to the cable adapter is 6 1/2”–7 1/4” (165mm–184mm) after crimping.
- Install the Elbow onto the Cable Adapter
Lubricate (lubricant supplied) the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Make sure the cable adapter is still flush with the tape marker; reposition if not. Remove the tape marker.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Product
DANGER: Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized. Do not energize while disconnected. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. Install the stud into the apparatus by hand until fully seated. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant. Push the elbow onto the mating part. Use the appropriate 600AT or 600ATM assembly tool to engage the contact assembly with the stud and torque to the specified value (19-25 ft/lbs for 600AT, 50-60 ft/lbs for 600ATM, do not exceed 60 ft/lbs).
- Ground the Cable Shield
Insert one end of a wire with ampacity at least equivalent to No. 14 AWG Copper through the grounding eye and twist to make a small loop. Do not damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The shield of the cable must be grounded; ground according to the instructions supplied with the grounding device or through an alternate method. Waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture from entering the cable.
- Install Mating Connector (if applicable) and Verify Seating
Clean and lubricate (lubricant supplied) the entire loadbreak interface and either a DR(G), ESA, GLR, or LR of the appropriate voltage class. Install the DR(G), ESA, GLR, or LR to the tap plug interface following the instructions supplied with each of these products. Complete assembly of an insulated cap or elbow is indicated by no portion of the colored interface sleeve being visible when viewed from the side.
- Perform Voltage Test (for 656CETP with test point)
WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; it is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling off at an angle. Test with a suitable sensing device, made for use with separable connectors manufactured with capacitive test points, to determine if the cable is energized. WARNING: Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' test point indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
