How to Install 655/656/675/676CETP Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 655/656/675/676CETP Deadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, crimping, and connection to high voltage apparatus.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Wire brush (for aluminum conductor), 600ATM assembly tool (or 600AT for older products), Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device, Measuring tape
Supplies needed:
655/656/675/676CETP Elbow Connector kit (includes Elbow, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Lubricant), Vinyl plastic tape, Tape retainer (if applicable), Tape marker, No. 14 AWG Copper equivalent grounding wire, Suitable grounding connector, Silicone grease, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s)
- Prepare for Installation and Ensure Safety
DANGER: De-energize all apparatus before installation or removal. Read all instructions, check package contents, and ensure components fit the cable and mating products. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before energizing.
- Position Cable and Clean Outer Surface
Position the cable in its final assembled location with enough slack for elbow removal. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm) or up to the bent-back concentric neutral wires.
- Prepare Cable Jacket and Shield
Remove the outer jacket to the specified dimension. Fold back shield wires. Depending on cable type, remove flat metallic tape shield (secure with vinyl plastic tape), fabric tape shield (install tape retainer and marker), or longitudinally corrugated shield (install tape marker). If using UNISHIELD® or lead sheath cable, refer to 10TL cable shield adapter instructions. Remove semi-con shield and install tape marker, ensuring not to cut or nick the cable insulation.
- Bevel Insulation and Install Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation (working toward the semi-con shield) with the supplied lubricant. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Expose Conductor
Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Be careful not to cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. The exposed conductor length should be 4-3/8 to 4-11/16 inches (111mm to 119mm). If not, redo the assembly.
- Crimp Compression Lug
Fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. If using an aluminum conductor, wire brush it immediately before insertion. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping (must be less than 6-1/2 inches / 165mm). Crimp the compression lug according to the supplied crimping instructions. Wipe off any excess inhibitor. The distance from the end of the compression lug to the cable adapter after crimping should be 6-1/2 to 7-1/4 inches (165mm to 184mm). If not, redo the assembly.
- Install Elbow onto Cable Adapter
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance with the supplied lubricant. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Ensure the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker. If not, reposition the cable adapter. Remove the tape marker.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Apparatus
DANGER: Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized. Do not energize while disconnected. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. Install the stud into the apparatus by hand until fully seated. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, keeping surfaces clean.
- Torque Contact Assembly
Push the elbow onto the mating part. Using the 600ATM assembly tool (for products dated October 1, 2013, or later), engage the hex broach in the contact assembly. Insert the contact assembly into the elbow interface to engage the stud. Tighten the contact assembly to 50-60 foot-pounds torque. DO NOT EXCEED 60 FOOT-POUNDS TORQUE. (For products dated September 30, 2013, or earlier, use the 600AT tool and torque to 19-25 foot-pounds until it ratchets).
- Ground Cable Shield and Waterproof
Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG Copper equivalent wire through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop, avoiding damage to the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded according to grounding device instructions or an alternate method. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.
- Install Loadbreak Interface (Optional)
Clean and lubricate the entire loadbreak interface and either a DR(G), ESA, GLR, or LR of the appropriate voltage class with the supplied or ELASTIMOLD® approved lubricant. Install the DR(G), ESA, GLR, or LR to the tap plug interface following the instructions supplied with those specific products.
- Verify Seating and Perform Voltage Test
Confirm complete assembly by ensuring no portion of the colored interface sleeve is visible when viewed from the side. For 656CETP models, remove the test point cap with a hotstick (peel off at an angle). WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device and follow its manufacturer's directions. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean, lubricate the cap with silicone grease, and replace it.
