Overview

ABB Installation Products 655LRTP-LM0380-DRG is a 600 Amp, 15kV deadbreak stick-op connector kit engineered for reliable medium-voltage cable connections in utility, industrial, and commercial applications. This kit is designed for cable insulation diameters between 1.280 inch and 1.430 inch, making it ideal for compressed stranded conductors sized 700/750 kcmil or compacted solid conductors up to 900 kcmil. The deadbreak design ensures safe, insulated operation in medium-voltage distribution systems, allowing for hot-stick operation without de-energizing the circuit. This feature enables secure connections while facilitating safe maintenance and testing procedures. The included insulated cap provides additional protection against accidental contact and environmental contaminants, ensuring long-term reliability. Key specifications include a 15kV phase-to-phase operating voltage, 125kV BIL impulse withstand, 40kV AC one-minute withstand, and 78kV DC 15-minute withstand. The connector meets ANSI/IEEE Standard 386 (Latest Revision) and delivers 600 Amp continuous current with 25kA symmetrical momentary rating for 10 cycles. Constructed from peroxide-cured EPDM molded rubber with an all-copper current path, the kit ensures low-resistance connections, reducing heat buildup and improving performance. The aluminum compression lug provides a secure, corrosion-resistant termination, while the hex-broach design simplifies torque installation. This connector is fully shielded and submersible, making it suitable for harsh environments. The deadbreak design allows for external visible breaks via hotstick removal of the elbow, enhancing safety in deadfront construction with reduced space requirements—critical for higher voltage levels.

How to Install the 655LRTP-LM0380-DRG Insulated Cap with Ground Lead

Instructions for installing and removing the 655LRTP-LM0380-DRG insulated cap with ground lead on a loadbreak bushing interface.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Hotstick, Screwdriver (for system ground connection, if applicable)

Supplies needed:

Insulated Cap with Ground Lead, Lubricant (supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved), Mounting screws (if applicable for system ground)

  1. Connect the electrostatic grounding wire

Connect the free end of the electrostatic grounding wire to the system ground. Ensure there is enough slack for hot-stick operation. CAUTION: Train the grounding wire so it does not contact the bushing interface during operation. WARNING: If the ground lead disconnects during operation, do not attempt to reattach without first pulling the insulated cap off the bushing with the hotstick.

  2. Prepare the insulated cap

Remove the protective cover from the insulated cap. Lubricate the cap's internal mating surface using only the supplied lubricant or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricants. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Keep the internal mating surface free from dirt and grime. Always replace the protective cover when not in use.

  3. Install the insulated cap

Firmly attach the hotstick to the insulated cap's pulling eye. Insert the male contact of the insulated cap into the loadbreak bushing. Push home with a fast, firm, straight motion, ensuring it is fully mated and the locking ring is seated. Detach the hotstick from the insulated cap.

  4. Remove the insulated cap

Attach the hotstick to the pulling eye. Before pulling, rotate the insulated cap clockwise while in the mated position to break surface friction. Pull the receptacle off with a fast, firm, straight motion. Remove the electrostatic grounding wire of the insulated cap from the system ground. Replace the protective cover on the insulated cap to keep its internal surface clean.
