Overview

The ABB 655CETPF0260DRG is a 15kV, 600 Amp Combo T Elbow Reducing Tap Plug Kit engineered for medium-voltage electrical systems requiring secure, insulated tap connections. This kit includes a stud, cable adapter, lug, and insulated cap, providing a complete solution for 200 Amp tap-offs from a 600 Amp main circuit. Designed for compatibility with compressed stranded 3/0 AWG, compacted solid 4/0 AWG, or 95 mm² compact conductors, the plug accommodates cable insulation diameters from 0.640" to 0.820". The aluminum construction ensures durability and optimal conductivity in demanding industrial environments. Key features include a simplified connection system that reduces stack height by 2.67" and minimizes cross-threading risks during installation. The internal hex broach ensures proper torque application, while the IEEE 386 color-coded PBT interface improves visibility and seating verification. The hollow bore design allows visual confirmation of lug positioning before final assembly. Installation requires standard tools, with the 600ATM assembly tool recommended for optimal performance. This tap plug meets ANSI/IEEE Standard 386 requirements, including 8.3kV phase-to-ground and 14.4kV phase-to-phase operating voltages, with a 95kV BIL impulse withstand rating. It supports 200 Amp continuous and loadbreak operations, with a 10kA symmetrical momentary rating. The kit is designed for deadbreak applications, ensuring safe operation when connecting to energized equipment. For 900 Amp applications, refer to the 675ETPSP series. Applications include medium-voltage distribution systems, industrial power networks, and utility substations where reliable tap connections are critical. The absence of a test point simplifies installation and reduces potential failure points in configurations where testing is not required.

How to Install 655/656/675/676CETP Deadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides detailed instructions for the safe and proper installation of 655/656/675/676CETP Deadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, lug crimping, and final assembly for high voltage apparatus. Ensure all safety precautions are followed.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Wire brush (for aluminum conductor), 600AT assembly tool (for products dated Sep 30, 2013 or earlier), 600ATM assembly tool (for products dated Oct 1, 2013 or later), Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for voltage test)

Supplies needed:

655/656/675/676CETP Elbow connector, Cable adapter, Compression lug, Lubricant (supplied), Vinyl plastic tape, Tape retainer (if applicable), Tape marker, Ground wire (at least No. 14 AWG Copper), Suitable connector for ground, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers), Silicone grease (for test point cap)

  1. Perform Safety and Pre-installation Checks

WARNING: De-energize all apparatus before installation or removal. Do not touch or move energized products. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Check package contents for completeness. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before energizing or submerging.

  2. Prepare the Cable End

Position the cable with enough slack for elbow removal. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer surface of the cable for 24 inches (610mm). Remove the outer jacket, shield wires, flat metallic tape shield, fabric tape shield, longitudinally corrugated shield, UNISHIELD® cable, lead sheath cable, or semi-con shield according to the specific cable type and dimensions provided in the documentation. Ensure not to cut or nick the cable insulation.

  3. Install Cable Adapter and Prepare Conductor

Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, working toward the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker. Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Do not cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. The exposed conductor length should be 4-3/8 to 4-11/16 inches (111mm-119mm); otherwise, redo the assembly.

  4. Crimp the Compression Lug

For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor and immediately fully insert it into the compression lug. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping; it should be less than 6-1/2 inches (165mm). Crimp the compression lug following the instructions supplied with the lug. Wipe all excess inhibitor from the compression lug and cable adapter surface after crimping. The distance from the end of the compression lug to the cable adapter after crimping should be 6-1/2 to 7-1/4 inches (165mm-184mm); otherwise, redo the assembly.

  5. Install the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance with the supplied lubricant. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Ensure the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker. If not, reposition the cable adapter. Remove the tape marker.

  6. Connect to Mating Product

DANGER: Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized. Do not energize while disconnected. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. Install the stud into the apparatus by hand until fully seated. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant. Push the elbow onto the mating part. For products dated September 30, 2013 or earlier, use the 600AT assembly tool to torque the contact assembly until the torque limiter ratchets (19 to 25 foot/pounds). For products dated October 1, 2013 or later, use the 600ATM assembly tool and tighten to 50-60 foot/pounds torque, but do not exceed 60 foot-pounds.

  7. Ground the Cable Shield

Insert one end of a wire with ampacity at least equivalent to No. 14 AWG Copper through the grounding eye and twist to make a small loop, ensuring not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded according to the instructions supplied with any grounding device used, or through an alternate method if no grounding device is present. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.

  8. Install Loadbreak Interface (Optional)

Clean and lubricate the entire loadbreak interface and either a DR(G), ESA, GLR, or LR of the appropriate voltage class with the supplied lubricant or ELASTIMOLD® approved lubricant. Install the DR(G), ESA, GLR, or LR to the tap plug interface following the instructions supplied with those specific products.

  9. Verify Seating and Test Voltage

Verify complete assembly by ensuring no portion of the colored interface sleeve is visible when viewed from the side. If the ELASTIMOLD® deadbreak elbow connector has an integral capacitance test point, remove the test point cap with a hotstick (peel off at an angle). WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Use a suitable sensing device made for capacitive test points and follow its manufacturer’s directions. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious injury. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
