How to Install the LINK-C Deadbreak Cam Link Operable Connector System

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and setup of the LINK-C 600 amp deadbreak cam link operable connector system, including cable preparation, component assembly, and grounding procedures. All apparatus must be de-energized during installation.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Torque wrench, Wrench/Socket set, Suitable tool for 1 inch hex portion (e.g., 1 inch hex socket), 600ATM Operating Tool, 600AMT Operating Tool, Hot stick, Wire strippers, Crimpers (for ground connectors), Welding equipment (if installing studs)

Supplies needed:

ELASTIMOLD supplied lubricant, 3/8-16 x 2 inch studs (if applicable), Hex nuts (3/8-16), Lockwashers (3/8-16), Alignment bracket hardware (hex bolts, lock washers), #14 AWG or #12 AWG solid copper wire, Appropriate ground connectors, Desired 200 amp mating product (e.g., insulated cap, loadbreak elbow, surge arrester)

  1. Prepare Cable and Install 600 Amp Elbow

Install the 600 amp elbow onto the cable according to its specific installation instructions, ensuring it will align with the stand-off plug. Ensure the cable is de-energized before beginning any work.

  2. Install Mounted Stand-Off Plug (If Applicable)

Weld three 3/8-16 x 2 inch studs to the equipment faceplate per customer standard practice. Install three hex nuts onto the studs to support the stand-off plug, ensuring it aligns with the apparatus bushing. Place the stand-off plug over the studs. Secure with lockwashers and hex nuts, tightening to 12 ft-lbs. Verify the top surfaces of the bushing and stand-off plug are in-line.

  3. Assemble Bushing Extender and Elbow

Clean and lubricate the apparatus bushing and both interfaces of the 600 amp bushing extender with ELASTIMOLD supplied lubricant. Install the bushing extender onto the apparatus bushing. Insert the 600ATM into the retainer contact, engage the internal hex broach, and thread into the apparatus bushing using a suitable tool on the 1 inch hex portion, torquing to 50-60 ft-lbs. Clean and lubricate the epoxy standoff plug and both interfaces of the 600 amp elbow with ELASTIMOLD supplied lubricant. Install the elbow onto the epoxy standoff plug. Insert the 600AMT into the retainer contact, engage the internal hex broach, and thread into the epoxy standoff plug using a suitable tool on the 1 inch hex portion, torquing to 50-60 ft-lbs.

  4. Install and Align the Alignment Bracket

Remove the bushing extender clamp and elbow clamp from the alignment bracket. Position the alignment bracket on the bushing extender 2.5 inches (63.5mm) from the grounding eye. Assemble the bushing extender clamp to the alignment bracket with supplied hardware, torquing alternating sides until the clamp tabs are flush with each other and tight. Position the elbow in the alignment bracket such that the elbow cuff aligns evenly with the bushing extender cuff. Assemble the elbow clamp to the alignment bracket with supplied hardware, torquing alternating sides until the clamp tabs are flush with each other and tight, ensuring the elbow clamp notch faces the cable entrance.

  5. Install the LINK-C Connector

Clean and lubricate both 600 ampere interfaces of the Link with ELASTIMOLD supplied lubricant. Align the Link such that when inserted into the bushing extender and elbow, the Link is perpendicular to the switch faceplate. Insert the Link into the bushing extender and elbow, making sure both lever arms are on the inside of the alignment bracket legs. Engage the pivot pin into the slots in the alignment bracket legs. While pushing inward, move the lever arms downward by use of a hot stick eye, thus engaging the roller pin and moving the Link inward. Continue moving lever arms until perpendicular to the alignment bracket leg.

  6. Ground the System Components

Ground the elbow by feeding a #14 AWG or #12 AWG solid copper wire through the grounding eye on the elbow, twisting tight, and connecting to ground. Clean and lubricate the 200 amp interface on the Link. Ground, then install the desired mating product on the 200 amp interface per its specific installation instructions. Ground the cable: if concentric neutral cable is used, twist the concentric neutral wires together and connect to ground using an appropriate connector; if 20MA or 21MA grounding devices are used, connect the ground lead from the device to ground using a suitable connector. For three-phase installations, tie all grounds from all three phases to a common ground point.
