Overview

The ABB 600ECS-G3 Cold-Shrinkable Seal with Copper Braid & Constant Force Spring is a field-proven solution for jacketed cable sealing and grounding in medium-voltage applications. Designed for jacketed copper tape shield cables, this kit prevents moisture ingress, UV degradation, and ozone damage while maintaining electrical continuity. The cold-shrink EPDM rubber tube, pre-stretched over a spring coil, expands to form a tight seal when released—eliminating the need for heat or specialized tools. The integrated flat copper braid provides a reliable ground path, and mastic strips ensure a watertight seal across jacket diameters from 1.28 inches (32.51 mm) to 2.30 inches (58.42 mm), with a maximum installed diameter of 2.75 inches. Rated for temperatures from -40°C to 65°C (-40°F to 149°F), the 600ECS-G3 is ideal for medium-voltage cable terminations, elbows, and accessory installations where environmental protection and electrical shielding are critical. Compatible with solid dielectric insulated power cables, this kit meets ANSI/IEEE Standard 386 and is engineered for durability in both indoor and outdoor industrial environments. Installation is tool-free and requires only the included components: cold shrink tube, conductive copper tape, flat copper braid, spring coil, and mastic strips.

How to Install the 600 ECS-G3 Jacketed Cable Grounding and Sealing Kit

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 600 ECS-G3 Jacketed Cable Grounding and Sealing Kit on jacketed copper tape shielded cable, ensuring proper grounding and sealing.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Cable knife, Wire strippers, Cleaning cloth, Crimping tool, Scissors

Supplies needed:

Cold Shrink Tube, Mastic, Flat Copper Braid, Conductive Copper Tape, Spring Coil, Vinyl tape, Grounding connector, #14 AWG Copper Wire

  1. Prepare the Cable and Cold Shrink Tube

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before starting installation to prevent serious or fatal injury. Inspect all kit contents for completeness and damage, and verify component fit with the cable. Wipe the outer jacket of the cable clean for a distance of 30 inches (750mm). Slide the cold shrink tube (loose end first) onto the cable for a distance of 18 inches (458mm).

  2. Remove Cable Jacket and Copper Tape Shield

Remove the outer jacket for a distance of 4 inches (102mm) beyond the semi-con shield skive dimension recommended by the product manufacturer. Then, remove the copper tape shield for a distance of 1 1/2 inches (38mm) from the end of the semi-con shield.

  3. Apply Conductive Copper Tape and Mastic

Wrap conductive copper tape around the edge to keep the copper tape shield in place, ensuring a 1/4 inch (6mm) overlap. Install the desired product per its manufacturer’s instructions. Apply one wrap of mastic.

  4. Install Braided Copper Wire and Spring Coil

Slightly flare the end of the braided copper wire with the solder block and place it on the copper shield, flush against the cable jacket. Wrap the spring coil around the braid and cable for two complete turns. Bend the braid back over the spring and wrap the remainder of the spring coil around the braid and cable. Finger tighten the spring coil and secure its end with a short piece of copper tape. Ensure the solder block of the braid is centered on top of the mastic tape.

  5. Seal Braid with Mastic and Vinyl Tape

Apply mastic over the braid as shown in the diagram. Overwrap the mastic with two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape. Wrap a third piece of mastic around the cable entrance of the connector being used. Overwrap this mastic with two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape.

  6. Position and Collapse Cold Shrink Tube

Pull the loose end of the cold shrink tube from the back and unwind the cord in a clockwise direction until the plastic core is flush with the end of the cold shrink tube. Slide the cold shrink tube into position and continue to unwind the cord in a clockwise direction. The cold shrink tube will collapse at the product end first. IMPORTANT: If no cable adapters are used, the tube must overlap the elbow or joint end by at least 1 inch (25mm) for a proper seal. If cable adapters are used, the tube must overlap the adapter and butt against the accompanying housing for a proper seal.

  7. Ground the Assembly

Using a suitable connector (not supplied) and #14 AWG copper wire, ground the assembly in accordance with standard utility practices and local electrical standards.
