For Aluminum and Copper ConductorsHow to Install the ECS-G1 Jacketed Cable Grounding and Sealing Kit
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the ECS-G1 Jacketed Cable Grounding and Sealing Kit, ensuring proper grounding and sealing of jacketed drain wire shielded cables. All apparatus must be de-energized during installation.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Cleaning cloth, Cable strippers or knife, Wire cutters, Crimping tool
Supplies needed:
Cold Shrink Tube, Mastic (3 pieces), Ground Rod (#2 AWG conductor equivalent), Vinyl Tape, Cable connector (per manufacturer's instructions, not supplied), Suitable grounding connector (not supplied)
- Prepare the Cable and Observe Safety
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Do not touch or move energized products in the work area. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Wipe the outer jacket clean for a distance of 30 inches (750mm). Remove the outer jacket for a distance of 4 inches (102mm) beyond the semi-con shield dimension recommended by the product manufacturer. Un-wrap the outer wires, but DO NOT CUT THEM OFF. Bend and fold the wires back out of the way. Wrap a piece of vinyl tape around the cable, covering the wire ends.
- Install Cold Shrink Tube and Cable Connector
Slide the cold shrink tube (loose end first) onto the cable for a distance of 18 inches (458mm). Install the main cable connector onto the cable according to its manufacturer's instructions.
- Prepare and Attach the Ground Rod
Cut the twisted wires to the appropriate length to fit into the connector of the ground rod and crimp them securely. Apply one wrap of mastic as shown in the product documentation. Place the ground rod against the cable. Apply the second piece of mastic over the ground rod. Overwrap this mastic with two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape. Wrap the third piece of mastic around the cable entrance of the connector being used. Overwrap this mastic with two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape.
- Shrink the Cold Shrink Tube
Pull the loose end of the cold shrink tube from the back and unwind the cord in a clockwise direction until the plastic core is flush with the end of the cold shrink tube. Slide the cold shrink tube into its final position and continue to unwind the cord in a clockwise direction. The cold shrink tube will collapse at the product end first. IMPORTANT: The tube must overlap the elbow or joint end by at least 1 inch (25mm) or the cable adapter to the shoulder for a proper seal.
- Ground the Assembly
Using a suitable connector (not supplied with this kit), ground the entire assembly in accordance with standard utility practices and local/national electrical standards. Ensure the connection to the system ground is secure.
