How to Install 53xxSST6 Stainless Steel Liquid-Tight Flexible Metallic Conduit Fittings
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the proper installation of 53xxSST6 series stainless steel liquid-tight fittings for flexible metallic conduit, ensuring high performance and reliability in liquid-tight and dust-tight applications.
Estimated time: 20m
Tools needed:
Hacksaw, Power band saw (optional), Metal jig (optional), Screwdriver, Hammer, Torque Wrench
Supplies needed:
Liquid-tight flexible metallic conduit, 53xxSST6 Stainless Steel Liquid-tight Fitting, LNSS Series Locknut (purchase separately, if required for knockout applications), 526x Series Seal Gasket (purchase separately, if required for knockout applications)
- Prepare the Flexible Conduit
Cut the end of the flexible conduit with a clean, square cut. Use a metal jig, a 32 tooth/inch hacksaw, or a 24-32 tooth/inch power band saw (not exceeding 400 feet/minute). DO NOT USE AN ABRASIVE WHEEL for cutting the conduit.
- Assemble the Fitting Components onto the Conduit
Slide the gland nut onto the prepared flexible conduit. Next, slide the nylon sealing ring onto the conduit. Finally, thread the SAFE-EDGE® ground cone into the conduit, ensuring it is properly seated.
- Install the Fitting into the Box Wall
Insert the assembled fitting into the desired opening in the box wall. For knockout applications, place a T&B® Series 5260 seal gasket (if required for liquid-tight and dust-tight installations) and a T&B® Series LNSS locknut onto the fitting's threads on the inside of the box wall. Hand-tighten the locknut, then further tighten it 1/4 turn using a hammer and a standard screwdriver or an equivalent method, as per UL, CSA & NEMA recommendations.
- Secure the Gland Nut
Tighten the gland nut to the UL recommended torque value specified in the provided table for your specific fitting part number and trade size. For example, for a 53x7SST6 (2" NPT) fitting, tighten to 1600 lb-in (181 N-m) to ensure a liquid-tight seal.
