How to Install the 160GLR & 370GLR Grounding Elbow

This guide provides instructions for the safe installation and connection of the 160GLR and 370GLR grounding elbows to de-energized UD systems, ensuring proper grounding and operation.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Hotstick, Suitable sensing device for capacitive test points, Meter capable of direct reading system voltage

Supplies needed:

Grounding Elbow, Lubricant (supplied)

  1. Connect Ground Lead

Connect the ground lead on the grounding elbow to the system ground. Ensure enough slack is left in the ground lead for hotstick operation of the grounding elbow. DANGER: The ground lead must be connected to system ground before connecting the elbow to the bushing.

  2. Lubricate Grounding Elbow

Remove the protective cap from the grounding elbow. Apply a light, uniform coat of the supplied lubricant, working it thoroughly into the surface. CAUTION: Avoid excess lubricant, as it may prevent the grounding elbow from fully seating in the 'locked on' position. Keep the internal mating surface free from dirt and grime.

  3. Verify System De-energization

DANGER: Ensure the system is de-energized before proceeding. Use either an indirect test with a suitable sensing device for capacitive test points (following manufacturer's directions) or a direct test using a 370TR Test Rod with a meter capable of direct voltage reading. If voltage is indicated by either procedure, do not proceed without de-energizing the system. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means.

  4. Connect Grounding Elbow to Bushing

DANGER: Continue to treat the system as energized using a hotstick for all operations. Do not operate by hand. Firmly tighten a hotstick to the grounding elbow operating eye. Place the grounding elbow receptacle area over the bushing, inserting the probe approximately 1 to 2 inches into the bushing. Firmly thrust the grounding elbow home with a fast, straight motion to engage the internal lock into the bushing interface.
