Overview

The ABB 3701A3 is a 35kV, 200 Amp Loadbreak Bushing Insert engineered for medium-voltage electrical systems. Designed by ABB - Installation Products, this component provides a reliable apparatus bushing interface for connecting shielded cable to critical infrastructure such as sub-surface transformers, pad-mounted transformers, generators, switchgear, regulators, and reclosers. The 3701A3 meets ANSI/IEEE Standard 386 and is rated for both single-phase (1Ø) and three-phase (3Ø) switching applications, ensuring versatility across diverse electrical distribution networks. Key specifications include a maximum phase-to-ground operating voltage of 21.1kV, phase-to-phase voltage of 36.6kV, and a basic impulse insulation level (BIL) of 150kV. The bushing insert supports continuous and loadbreak currents up to 200 Amps, with a momentary and fault close rating of 10kA symmetrical for 10 cycles. Additional electrical performance metrics include a 50kV AC one-minute withstand, 103kV DC 15-minute withstand, and 26kV AC corona extinction at 3pC sensitivity, ensuring robust insulation integrity in high-voltage environments. The 3701A3 features a black vent ring for pressure relief and an internal torquing mechanism compatible with the 200AT Assembly Tool, enabling precise and secure installation. Each kit includes the bushing insert, protective shipping cap (2701-41), lubricant (82-08), and installation instructions (IS-0358), simplifying procurement and deployment. Ideal for utility power distribution, industrial facilities, and substations, the ABB 3701A3 delivers consistent performance in medium-voltage applications, reducing connection failures and minimizing maintenance downtime. Its compatibility with standard ANSI bushing well interfaces and Elastimold® universal bushing wells ensures seamless integration into existing infrastructure.

How to Install the 3701A3 Loadbreak Bushing Insert

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of the 3701A3 Loadbreak Bushing Insert, designed for 35KV class loadbreak connectors.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Pliers, Wire strippers

Supplies needed:

3701A3 Loadbreak Bushing Insert, Lubricant (supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm²) copper wire, Suitable connector for system ground

  1. Ensure Safety and Inspect Components

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Follow operating instructions for loadbreak products. Ensure all components are checked for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Inspect the apparatus bushing well to ensure it is dry and free from all contaminants.

  2. Lubricate and Prepare the Bushing Insert

Remove the protective shipping cap from the bushing insert. Lubricate the bushing well interface area of the bushing insert with the supplied lubricant or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful to the product.

  3. Install the Bushing Insert

Place the lubricated portion of the bushing insert into the apparatus bushing well. Hand tighten the bushing insert in a clockwise direction until it bottoms.

  4. Connect the Electrostatic Grounding Wire

Push a length of No. 14 AWG (2.5mm²) copper wire or equivalent through one of the grounding tabs on the bushing insert. Make a small loop and twist it tight, taking care not to damage the grounding tab. Connect the free end of the electrostatic grounding wire to the system ground using a suitable connector. Ensure the grounding wire does not contact the bushing interface, adjacent interfaces, or interfere with accessories on nearby parking stands.

  5. Prepare for Mating Products or Storage

Thoroughly wipe the bushing interface clean of any contaminants and lubricate with the supplied lubricant. Install the mating products (e.g., elbow connector, insulated cap) to the bushing insert following their specific instructions. If not immediately mating, replace the shipping cover. DANGER: Do not energize or submerge the apparatus with only the shipping cap, as it is not insulated or watertight.
