How to Install and Configure the 274FT4-AB Feed-Thru/Grounding Device

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of the 274FT4-AB Feed-Thru/Grounding Device, including its use as a junction or grounding point.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Hotstick, Wrench, Voltage detection device (specialized for capacitive test points), 370TR test rod, Meter (capable of direct reading system voltage)

Supplies needed:

Ground lead (No. 14 copper wire or equivalent), Lubricant (supplied with feed-thru), Mounting hardware (supplied with feed-thru), Loadbreak elbow(s) (for junction point application), Grounding elbow (for grounding point application)

  1. De-energize Apparatus and Follow Safety Protocols

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Install and operate all apparatus in accordance with individual user, local, and national work rules. Do not touch or move energized products. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Failure to follow these instructions will result in damage to the product and serious or fatal injury.

  2. Inspect and Prepare Components

Check the contents of the package to ensure all parts are complete and undamaged. Verify all components for proper fit with the cable and/or mating products. If supplied with protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing the circuit.

  3. Connect Ground Lead

Insert a No. 14 copper wire or equivalent ground lead into the grounding lug provided on the mounting hardware and tighten the lug firmly. Connect the opposite end of the ground lead to ground, ensuring enough slack is left to operate with a hotstick.

  4. Prepare Feed-Thru Bushings

Remove any protective caps from the bushings of the feed-thru. These caps must not be on the bushings when the feed-thru is in use. Clean the bushing surfaces thoroughly and lubricate them with only the lubricant supplied. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE, as other lubricants may be harmful to the product.

  5. Adjust Mounting Bracket

Loosen the bottom nut of the mounting bracket only enough to allow the bracket to move. Rotate the bracket into the required position and then firmly tighten the bottom nut to secure it.

  6. Mount Feed-Thru to Parking Stand

Firmly attach the feed-thru eye to a hotstick. Using the hotstick, slide the feed-thru onto the parking stand. Unlock the hotstick and back it off slightly to create space for tightening the eyebolt. Tighten the eyebolt by rotating the hotstick clockwise until it is snug. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN. Release the hotstick.

  7. Determine Application Type

The feed-thru can be used as either a junction point or a grounding point. If using as a junction point, proceed to Step 8. If using as a grounding point, proceed to Step 10.

  8. Junction Point Application: Connect First Loadbreak Elbow

Remove one loadbreak elbow from its apparatus loadbreak bushing, following the applicable loadbreak operating instructions. Using a hotstick firmly attached to the elbow, insert the probe tip into one feed-thru bushing until the first slight resistance is felt. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the mating interfaces.

  9. Junction Point Application: Connect Additional Loadbreak Elbows

Remove the second loadbreak elbow, following the applicable loadbreak operating instructions. Using a hotstick firmly attached to the elbow, insert the probe tip into the remaining feed-thru bushing until the first slight resistance is felt. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock. Repeat this process for any third and fourth elbows if applicable.

  10. Grounding Point Application: Verify System De-energized

IMPORTANT: Do not insert a grounding elbow into the feed-thru unless the circuit has been tested and confirmed de-energized. Verify the system is de-energized by either checking the capacitive test point on a loadbreak elbow with an appropriate voltage detection device (requires specially designed instruments) or by removing an existing elbow/insulated cap, inserting a 370TR test rod with a hotstick, and checking the test rod disc for voltage with a direct-reading meter. If voltage is indicated by either procedure, do not proceed without de-energizing the system. Be careful to keep the hotstick eye and disc of the test rod clear from ground until tested 'de-energized'.

  11. Grounding Point Application: Install Grounding Elbow

Install the grounding elbow onto the bushing plug of the feed-thru, following the specific grounding elbow operating instructions (IS-160/370GLR). Ensure complete assembly is indicated by no portion of the yellow band being visible when viewed from the side (for 15kV & 25kV parts).
