What voltage classes are available for PCJ power cable joints?
Elastimold PCJ power cable joints are available in 15 kV, 25 kV, and 35 kV classes.
What is the short-time current rating of PCJ power cable joints?
The short-time current rating is equal to that of the cable rating, up to 35 kA.
Can copper connectors be used with aluminum conductors?
No, copper compression connectors are suitable for copper-to-copper connections only and should not be used on aluminum conductors.
What is the continuous current rating of PCJ power cable joints?
The continuous current rating of PCJ power cable joints is equal to that of the cable rating.
What pull force can the pin-and-socket interlock withstand?
The pin-and-socket interlock is designed to withstand a pull force of up to 500 lb.
What is the phase-to-ground voltage for a 35 kV class joint?
For a 35 kV class joint, the phase-to-ground voltage is 20.2 kV.
What is the BIL impulse withstand for a 35 kV class joint?
The BIL impulse withstand for a 35 kV class joint is 300 kV (1.2 x 50 μsec. wave).
What conductors are aluminum compression connectors suitable for?
Aluminum compression connectors are suitable for splicing aluminum conductor to aluminum conductor or aluminum conductor to copper conductor.
Do PCJ power cable joints provide a ground shield?
Yes, a molded conductive shield provides a virtually unbreakable ground shield for true dead-front construction. A grounding eye connects a ground wire.
Is taping required for cable entrance insulation shielding?
No, the cable entrance engages the insulation shielding of the cable, eliminating the need for taping.
How to Install the 15/25/35PCJ1,NPQ Straight Joint
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 15/25/35PCJ1,NPQ series straight joint, a permanent, fully shielded, and submersible joint for wire shielded cables. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before beginning installation to prevent serious injury or fatality.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tool, Cable jacket removal tool, Cable insulation removal tool, Wire-brush, Crimping tool, T&B WT3D tool (for 35kV only)
Supplies needed:
Joint Housing, Splice (Conductor Contact), Lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), Connector (User Supplied), DELTECt Cable ties (TYD5135, for 35kV only), #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent (if shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG)
- Perform Safety Checks and Initial Preparations
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before installation. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Check package contents for completeness. Read the entire instructions and have all required tools ready, maintaining cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare Cables for Joint Centerline
Overlap both cables and cut them to 12 inches (305mm) from the intended center line of the joint. Where applicable, remove the cable jacket of Cable 1 to 37 inches (940mm) and Cable 2 to 21 inches (530mm). Fold back the shield wires. Finally, cut both cables precisely at the center line of the joint.
- Prepare Cable 1 and Store Housing
Taper the edge of Cable 1's insulation shield from at least 1/2 inch (13mm) to no greater than 1-1/2 inches (38mm). Clean and lubricate the insulation shield of Cable 1. Lubricate the inside bore of the joint housing on both ends. Carefully slide the joint housing onto Cable 1, pushing it up to the shield wires for temporary storage.
- Prepare Cables for Splice Installation
Carefully remove the cable insulation from both Cable 1 and Cable 2 to the specified 'Y' dimension (e.g., 2 1/2 inches for 500-750 MCM, 2 3/8 inches for 1000 MCM). Then, carefully remove the insulation shield from both cables to the specified 'X' dimension (e.g., 6 1/4 inches for 500-750 MCM, 6 3/8 inches for 1000 MCM). DO NOT CUT OR NICK THE CABLE INSULATION OR CONDUCTOR during this process.
- Install and Crimp the Splice
If conductors are aluminum, wire-brush them immediately before insertion into the splice. Insert the conductors into the splice and check the dimension against the 'Max Check Before' table (e.g., 6 inches for 500-750 MCM, 6 7/8 inches for 1000 MCM); redo if it exceeds. Crimp the splice according to its provided recommendations. Wipe off any excess inhibitor. Check the distance between cable insulations against the 'Max Check After' table (e.g., 6 1/4 inches for 500-750 MCM, 6 1/2 inches for 1000 MCM); redo if it exceeds. Remove any sharp protrusions or burrs from crimping and clean metal chips from the splice and joint area. Clean and lubricate the cables where indicated, building up lubricant at the edge of the insulation shield.
- Complete Joint Assembly and Grounding
Slide the joint housing into its final position, ensuring proper placement by equalizing the deformation of the joint ends. For 35kV ONLY: Install two DELTECt Cable ties (TYD5135) 1/4 inch apart on each cable entrance, with offset locking heads, using the T&B WT3D tool. Remove and discard the yellow pin from the joint grounding eye. Retrain and secure shield wires to the joint ends. Insert one shield wire from each cable (if #14 AWG or larger) through the joint grounding eye; use separate #14 AWG copper wire if smaller. Connect all joint grounding wires and remaining shield wires with an appropriate connector. Reconstruct the cable jacket (if applicable) over cables and joint housing.
