How to Install the 15/25/35PCJ1 Series Straight Joint
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the permanent, fully shielded, and fully submersible installation of the 15/25/35PCJ1 series straight joint for aluminum to aluminum and/or aluminum to copper conductor, wire shielded cables. Ensure all safety precautions are followed.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Crimping tool, Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, T&B WT3D tool (for 35kV only)
Supplies needed:
Joint Housing, Splice (Conductor Contact), Lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), Appropriate connector (for grounding wires), Deltect Cable ties (TYD5135, for 35kV only), #14 AWG copper wire (if shield wires are smaller)
- Perform Safety Checks and Initial Inspection
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Do not touch or move energized products. This product must be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety. Inspect all parts for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Check package contents for completeness and ensure all components fit properly with the cable and/or mating products. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare Cables for Joint Centerline
Overlap both cables and cut them to 12 inches (305mm) from the center line of the joint. Where applicable, remove the cable jacket of Cable 1 to 37 inches (940mm) and Cable 2 to 21 inches (530mm). Fold back the shield wires. Finally, cut both cables precisely at the center line of the joint.
- Prepare Cable 1 and Store Housing
Taper the edge of Cable 1 from at least 1/2 inch (13mm) to no greater than 1-1/2 inches (38mm). Clean and lubricate the insulation shield of Cable 1. Lubricate the inside bore of the joint housing on both ends. Carefully slide the joint housing onto Cable 1, pushing it up to the shield wires for temporary storage.
- Prepare Cables for Splice Installation
Carefully remove the cable insulation from both Cable 1 and Cable 2. Subsequently, carefully remove the insulation shield from both cables. IMPORTANT: DO NOT CUT OR NICK THE CABLE INSULATION OR CONDUCTOR during this process. Measure and trim the conductor to the specified 'X' and 'Y' dimensions according to the conductor size (e.g., for 500-750 MCM, X=2 1/2 inches, Y=6 1/4 inches).
- Install and Crimp the Splice
If conductors are aluminum, wire-brush them thoroughly and immediately insert them into the splice. Check the conductor dimension against the 'Max Check Before' table; if it exceeds, redo the assembly. Crimp the splice following the manufacturer's recommendations. Wipe off any excess inhibitor. Check the distance between cable insulations against the 'Max Check After' table; if it exceeds, redo the assembly. Remove any sharp protrusions or burrs generated during crimping. Ensure all metal chips and filings are removed from the splice and joint assembly area before sliding the joint housing.
- Position Joint Housing
Slide the joint housing into its final position. Ensure proper placement by observing and equalizing the deformation of the joint ends caused by the underlying cable insulation shield. For 35kV ONLY: Install two DELTECt Cable ties on each end of the cable entrance. Begin by installing the outer ties approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) from the edge of the splice, then install the second ties approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) from the first with an offset of the locking heads. Use the T&B WT3D tool (not included) to tighten and trim the ties. Remove and discard the yellow pin from the joint grounding eye.
- Complete Grounding and Jacket Reconstruction
Retrain the shield wires and secure them to the ends of the joint as shown in the diagram. Insert one of the shield wires from Cable 1 (if #14 AWG or larger) through the joint grounding eye, and repeat this for Cable 2. If shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG, use a separate #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent. Connect the joint grounding wires and any remaining shield wires using an appropriate connector. Finally, reconstruct the cable jacket (where applicable) over both cables and the joint housing to complete the installation.
