What are Elastimold PCJ power cable joints used for?
They are used for straight splicing of two similar cables or transition splicing of different cable sizes, providing a permanent, fully shielded, fully submersible splice.
What is the short-time current rating of PCJ joints?
The short-time current rating of PCJ power cable joints is equal to that of the cable rating, up to 35 kA.
How is a catalog number constructed for transition joints?
When constructing a catalog number for a transition joint, list the larger connector first and the smaller connector second.
What type of connector is included for aluminum conductors?
Kits include an aluminum compression connector suitable for splicing aluminum conductor to aluminum conductor or aluminum conductor to copper conductor.
Can copper connectors be used on aluminum conductors?
No, copper compression connectors included in kits are suitable for copper-to-copper connections only and should not be used on aluminum conductors.
What is the maximum pull force the interlock withstands?
The pin-and-socket interlock of the PCJ power cable joints is designed to withstand a pull force up to 500 lb.
What standards do PCJ joint shields and connectors meet?
The shield design meets IEEE 592 standard, and the connectors meet ANSI 119.4 Class A and Class 3 ratings.
What is the continuous current rating of PCJ joints?
The continuous current rating of PCJ power cable joints is equal to that of the cable rating.
What is the maximum conductor size supported by PCJ joints?
PCJ power cable joints support conductor sizes up to 1250 kcmil for both copper and aluminum conductors.
Where can PCJ power cable joints be installed?
They can be installed in direct-burial, underground vault, and even overhead applications, as they provide a permanent, fully shielded, fully submersible splice.
How to Install the 35PCJ1J Straight Joint
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the permanent, fully shielded, and submersible installation of the 35PCJ1J straight joint for wire shielded cables. It covers preparation, splicing, and final assembly for aluminum to aluminum and/or aluminum to copper conductors.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tool, Cable jacket stripping tool, Cable insulation stripping tool, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Measuring tape or ruler, Utility knife or tapering tool, T&B WT3D tool (for 35kV DELTECt ties, if applicable)
Supplies needed:
35PCJ1J Joint Housing, Splice (Conductor Contact), Lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), Appropriate connector for grounding wires, DELTECt Cable ties (TYD5135, for 35kV installations only), #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent (if existing shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG)
- Perform Initial Safety Checks and Preparation
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all parts (housing, splice, lubricant) for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating parts and cables. Ensure all required tools are at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare Cables for Jointing
Overlap both cables and cut them to 12 inches (305mm) from the joint centerline. Remove the cable jacket of Cable 1 to 37 inches (940mm) and Cable 2 to 21 inches (530mm). Fold back the shield wires on both cables. Cut both cables at the joint centerline.
- Prepare Cable 1 and Store Housing
Taper the edge of Cable 1's insulation shield from 1/2 inch to 1-1/2 inches (13mm to 38mm). Clean and lubricate the insulation shield of Cable 1. Lubricate the inside bore of the joint housing on both ends. Slide the joint housing onto Cable 1, pushing it up to the shield wires.
- Prepare Cables for Splice Installation
Carefully remove the cable insulation and then the insulation shield from both Cable 1 and Cable 2 according to the specified 'X' and 'Y' dimensions for your conductor size (500-750 MCM or 1000 MCM). DO NOT CUT OR NICK THE CABLE INSULATION OR CONDUCTOR during this process.
- Install the Splice
If conductors are aluminum, wire-brush them thoroughly and immediately insert them into the splice. Check the conductor insertion dimension against the 'Max Check Before' table; if it exceeds the maximum, redo the assembly. Crimp the splice following the manufacturer's recommendations. Wipe off any excess inhibitor. Check the distance between cable insulations against the 'Max Check After' table; if it exceeds the maximum, redo the assembly. Remove any sharp protrusions or burrs from the crimped splice, ensuring all metal chips/filings are removed. Clean the cables where indicated and lubricate them to create a lubricant build-up at the edge of the insulation shield.
- Complete Joint Assembly and Grounding
Slide the joint housing into its final position, ensuring proper placement by observing and equalizing the deformation of the joint ends. For 35kV ONLY: Install two DELTECt Cable ties on each end of the cable entrance, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) from the splice edge and 1/4 inch (6mm) from the first tie, with offset locking heads. Use a T&B WT3D tool to tighten and trim the ties. Remove and discard the yellow pin from the joint grounding eye. Retrain the shield wires and secure them to the ends of the joint. Insert one shield wire from Cable 1 (if #14 AWG or larger) through the joint grounding eye; repeat for Cable 2. If shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG, use a separate #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent. Connect the joint grounding wires and the remaining shield wires using an appropriate connector. Reconstruct the cable jacket (if applicable) over both cables and the joint housing.
