How to Install the 35PCJ1 Series Cable Joint
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the permanent, fully shielded, and submersible installation of the 35PCJ1 series straight joint for wire shielded cables, connecting aluminum to aluminum or aluminum to copper conductors.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Cable stripping tool, Cable cutting tool, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Measuring tape, T&B WT3D tool (for 35kV only)
Supplies needed:
Joint Housing (included), Splice (Conductor Contact) (included), Lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE) (included), Connector (user supplied, for grounding wires), DELTECt Cable ties TYD5135 (for 35kV only), #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent (if needed), Cable jacket reconstruction material (where applicable)
- De-energize and Prepare Work Area
Ensure all apparatus in the work area are de-energized before beginning installation. Do not touch or move any energized products. Confirm that only competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices are performing this installation.
- Inspect Components and Gather Tools
Inspect the package contents to ensure all parts (Joint Housing, Splice, Lubricant) are complete and undamaged. Verify all components are compatible with the cable and mating products. Gather all required tools, including cable stripping/cutting tools, a wire brush (for aluminum conductors), a crimping tool, and a measuring tape. Maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare Cables for Joint (Step A)
Overlap both cables and cut them to a length of 12 inches (305mm) from the intended centerline of the joint. Where applicable, remove the cable jacket of Cable 1 to 37 inches (940mm) and Cable 2 to 21 inches (530mm). Fold back the shield wires on both cables. Finally, cut both cables precisely at the centerline of the joint.
- Prepare Cable 1 and Store Joint Housing (Step B)
Taper the edge of Cable 1's insulation shield to a length between 1/2 inch (13mm) and 1-1/2 inches (38mm). Clean and lubricate the insulation shield. Lubricate the inside bore of the joint housing on both ends. Carefully slide the joint housing onto Cable 1, positioning it up to the folded-back shield wires.
- Strip Cables for Splice Installation (Step C)
Carefully remove the cable insulation and then the insulation shield from both Cable 1 and Cable 2 according to the dimensions 'X' and 'Y' provided in the document for your specific conductor size (e.g., 500-750 MCM or 1000 MCM). Exercise extreme caution to avoid cutting or nicking the cable insulation or the conductor during this process.
- Install and Crimp the Splice (Step D)
If conductors are aluminum, wire-brush them thoroughly and immediately insert them into the splice. Check the dimension against the 'Max Check Before' table; if it exceeds, redo the assembly. Crimp the splice securely following the recommendations provided with the splice. Wipe off any excess inhibitor. Check the distance between cable insulations against the 'Max Check After' table; if it exceeds, redo the assembly. Remove any sharp protrusions or burrs generated during crimping and ensure all metal chips/filings are removed from the splice and joint assembly area. Clean the cables where indicated and lubricate them in the direction of the arrows to create a lubricant ramp at the edge of the insulation shield.
- Complete Joint Housing Assembly (Step E.1-2)
Slide the joint housing into its final position over the splice. Ensure proper positioning by observing and equalizing the deformation of the joint ends caused by the underlying cable insulation shield. For 35kV installations ONLY: Install two DELTECt Cable ties (TYD5135) on each end of the cable entrance. Position the outer ties approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) from the edge of the splice, and the second ties approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) from the first, with an offset of the locking heads. Use the T&B WT3D tool (if available) to tighten and trim the ties. Remove and discard the yellow pin from the joint grounding eye.
- Connect Grounding Wires and Reconstruct Jacket (Step E.3-6)
Retrain the shield wires and secure them to the ends of the joint as shown in the diagram. Insert one shield wire from Cable 1 (if #14 AWG or larger) through the joint grounding eye, and repeat for Cable 2. If shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG, use a separate #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent. Connect the joint grounding wires and the remaining shield wires using an appropriate user-supplied connector. Finally, reconstruct the cable jacket (where applicable) over both cables and the joint housing to complete the installation.
