How to Install the 15/25/35PCJ1 Series Straight Joint

This guide provides detailed instructions for the permanent, fully shielded, and fully submersible installation of the 15/25/35PCJ1 series straight joint for aluminum or copper conductor, wire shielded cables.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire brush, Crimping tool, Cable stripping tools, T&B WT3D tool (for 35kV cable ties)

Supplies needed:

Joint Housing, Splice (Conductor Contact), Lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), Grounding connector (user supplied), DELTECt Cable ties (TYD5135, for 35kV only), #14 AWG copper wire (or equivalent, if needed)

  1. Perform Safety Checks and Initial Inspection

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Check package contents to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Read the entire installation instructions before starting and have all required tools at hand, maintaining cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Prepare Cables and Store Joint Housing

Overlap both cables and cut them to 12 inches (305mm) from the centerline of the joint. Remove the cable jacket of Cable 1 to 37 inches (940mm) and Cable 2 to 21 inches (530mm). Fold back the shield wires. Cut both cables at the joint centerline. Taper the edge of Cable 1 at least 1/2 inch to no greater than 1-1/2 inches (13mm to 38mm). Clean and lubricate the insulation shield of Cable 1. Lubricate the inside bore of the joint housing on both ends. Slide the housing onto Cable 1 up to the shield wires.

  3. Prepare Cables for Splice and Install Splice

Carefully remove the cable insulation and then the insulation shield from both cables. DO NOT CUT OR NICK THE CABLE INSULATION OR CONDUCTOR. If conductors are aluminum, wire-brush them and immediately insert them into the splice. Crimp the splice following the recommendations provided with it. Wipe off all excess inhibitor where applicable. Remove any sharp protrusions or burrs generated during crimping; metal chips/filings must be removed from the splice and joint assembly area. Clean cables where indicated and lubricate in the direction of arrows to provide a build-up or ramp of lubricant at the edge of the insulation shield.

  4. Complete Joint Assembly and Grounding

Slide the housing into its final position. Proper positioning is ensured by observing and equalizing the deformation of the joint ends caused by the underlying cable insulation shield. For 35kV ONLY: Install two DELTECt Cable ties on each end of the cable entrance, approximately 1/4 inch from the edge of the splice and 1/4 inch from the first with offset locking heads. The T&B WT3D tool is recommended for tightening. Remove the yellow pin from the joint grounding eye and discard it. Retrain shield wires and secure them to the ends of the joint. Insert one shield wire from Cable 1 (if #14 AWG or larger) through the joint grounding eye, and repeat for Cable 2. If shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG, use separate #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent. Connect joint grounding wires and remaining shield wires using an appropriate connector. Reconstruct the cable jacket (where applicable) over both cables and the joint housing.
