How to Install the 15/25/35PCJ1 Series Straight Joint

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 15/25/35PCJ1 Series straight joint, a permanent, fully shielded, and submersible connection for wire shielded cables.

Estimated time: 2h

Tools needed:

Wire brush (for aluminum conductors), Cable cutting tool, Cable stripping tool, Crimping tool (for conductor splice), T&B WT3D tool (recommended for 35kV cable ties), Connector crimping tool (for grounding wires)

Supplies needed:

Conductor connector (user supplied), Lubricant (supplied with joint, do not substitute), DELTECt Cable ties (TYD5135, for 35kV only), #14 AWG copper wire (or equivalent, if shield wires are small), Appropriate connector (for grounding wires)

  1. Ensure Safety and Inspect Components

DANGER: De-energize all apparatus before beginning installation. Do not touch or move energized products in the work area. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Verify package contents are complete and undamaged. Confirm all components fit properly with the cable and/or mating products. Read the entire installation instructions thoroughly before starting. Gather all required tools and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Prepare Cables for Jointing

Overlap both cables and cut them to 12 inches (305mm) from the center line of the joint to ensure sufficient length for shield wires to rejoin. Remove the cable jacket of Cable 1 to 37 inches (940mm) and Cable 2 to 21 inches (530mm). Fold back the shield wires on both cables. Cut both cables precisely at the center line of the joint.

  3. Prepare Cable 1 and Store Housing

Taper the edge of Cable 1's insulation shield from at least 1/2 inch (13mm) to no greater than 1-1/2 inches (38mm). Clean and lubricate the insulation shield of Cable 1. Lubricate the inside bore of the joint housing on both ends. Slide the joint housing onto Cable 1, pushing it up to the shield wires; this procedure is tested not to contaminate electrical interfaces.

  4. Prepare Cables for Splice Installation

Carefully remove the cable insulation and then the insulation shield from both Cable 1 and Cable 2. WARNING: Do not cut or nick the cable insulation or conductor during this process. Ensure the conductor exposure ("X") and insulation shield removal ("Y") dimensions match the table for your conductor size: For 500 MCM - 750 MCM: Conductor "X" = 2 1/2" (64mm), Insulation Shield "Y" = 6 1/4" (159mm). For 1000 MCM: Conductor "X" = 2 3/8" (68mm), Insulation Shield "Y" = 6 3/8" (162mm).

  5. Install and Crimp the Splice

If conductors are aluminum, wire-brush them thoroughly and immediately insert them into the splice. Before crimping, check the dimension between the cable insulations. If it exceeds the "Max Check Before" dimension (6" (152mm) for 500-750 MCM, 6 7/8" (156mm) for 1000 MCM), redo the assembly. Crimp the splice according to the recommendations provided with the splice. Wipe off any excess inhibitor from the splice. After crimping, re-check the distance between cable insulations. If it exceeds the "Max Check After" dimension (6 1/4" (159mm) for 500-750 MCM, 6 1/2" (165mm) for 1000 MCM), redo the assembly. Remove any sharp protrusions or burrs created during crimping. Ensure all metal chips or filings are removed from the splice and joint assembly area before proceeding.

  6. Lubricate Cables for Housing Assembly

Clean the cables where indicated in the diagram. Lubricate the cables in the direction of the arrows shown in the diagram to create a build-up or ramp of lubricant at the edge of the insulation shield.

  7. Complete Joint Housing Assembly and Grounding

Slide the joint housing into its final position. Verify proper positioning by observing and equalizing the deformation of the joint ends caused by the underlying cable insulation shield. For 35kV ONLY: Install two DELTECt Cable ties (TYD5135) on each end of the cable entrance. Position the outer ties approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) from the splice edge, and the second ties approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) from the first, with an offset of their locking heads. Use a T&B WT3D tool (not included) to tighten and trim the ties. Remove and discard the yellow pin from the joint grounding eye. Retrain the shield wires and secure them to the ends of the joint as shown in the diagram. Insert one shield wire from Cable 1 (if #14 AWG or larger) through the joint grounding eye. Repeat for Cable 2. If shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG, use a separate #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent. Connect the joint grounding wires and the remaining shield wires using an appropriate connector. Reconstruct the cable jacket (if applicable) over both cables and the joint housing.
