What types of cable splicing can PCJ joints perform?
PCJ power cable joints can perform straight splicing of two similar cables or transition splicing of different cable sizes.
What safety standards do PCJ power cable joints meet?
The shield design meets IEEE 592 standard, and connectors meet ANSI 119.4 Class A and Class 3 ratings.
How do I order a PCJ joint for transition splicing?
When constructing a catalog number for a transition joint, list the larger connector first and the smaller connector second.
Can copper connectors be used with aluminum conductors?
No, copper compression connectors are suitable for splicing copper conductors to copper conductor only and should not be used on aluminum conductors.
Can aluminum connectors be used with copper conductors?
Yes, kits with aluminum compression connectors are suitable for splicing aluminum conductor to aluminum conductor or aluminum conductor to copper conductor.
What is the short-time current rating for PCJ joints?
The short-time current rating is equal to that of the cable rating, up to 35 kA.
What is the continuous current rating for PCJ joints?
The continuous current rating for PCJ power cable joints is equal to that of the cable rating.
Is taping required for PCJ joint installation?
No, the cable entrance engages the insulation shielding of the cable, eliminating the need for taping.
What are the differences between PCJ Style 1 and Style 2?
Style 1 is for straight splicing of two similar cables. Style 2 includes separate cable adapters for transition splicing between different cable sizes.
Where can PCJ power cable joints be installed?
They can be installed in direct-burial, underground vault, and overhead applications, as they are fully shielded and submersible.
How to Install the 15/25/35PCJ1 Straight Joint Housing
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 15/25/35PCJ1 series straight joint housing, a permanent, fully shielded, and submersible joint for high voltage cables. It covers cable preparation, splice installation, and final assembly.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire-brush, Crimping tool, Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Measuring tape, T&B WT3D tool (for 35kV only)
Supplies needed:
Joint Housing (included), Splice (included), Lubricant (included), DELTECt Cable ties (TYD5135, for 35kV only), #14 AWG copper wire (if needed), Appropriate electrical connectors
- De-energize Apparatus and Inspect Components
Before starting, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Inspect all components for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Read the entire instructions and have all required tools ready, maintaining cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare Cables for Joint Assembly
Overlap both cables and cut them to 12 inches (305mm) from the joint centerline. Where applicable, remove the cable jacket of Cable 1 to 37 inches (940mm) and Cable 2 to 21 inches (530mm). Fold back the shield wires and then cut both cables at the joint centerline.
- Prepare Cable 1 and Store Housing
Taper the edge of Cable 1 insulation from 1/2 inch to 1-1/2 inches (13mm to 38mm). Clean and lubricate the insulation shield. Lubricate the inside bore of the joint housing on both ends, then slide the housing onto Cable 1 up to the shield wires.
- Prepare Cables for Splice and Install Splice
Carefully remove the cable insulation and then the insulation shield from both cables. DO NOT CUT OR NICK THE CABLE INSULATION OR CONDUCTOR. If conductors are aluminum, wire-brush and immediately insert them into the splice. Crimp the splice according to its recommendations. Wipe off excess inhibitor, remove any sharp burrs, and clean the splice and joint area. Clean and lubricate cables as indicated, building up lubricant at the insulation shield edge.
- Complete Joint Assembly and Grounding
Slide the housing into its final position, ensuring equal deformation of the joint ends. For 35kV ONLY: Install two DELTECt Cable ties on each end of the cable entrance, 1/4 inch apart, using a T&B WT3D tool, and remove the yellow pin from the grounding eye. Retrain shield wires and secure them to the joint ends. Insert one shield wire from each cable (if #14 AWG or larger, otherwise use #14 AWG copper wire) through the joint grounding eye. Connect joint grounding wires and remaining shield wires using an appropriate connector. Reconstruct the cable jacket over both cables and the joint housing.
