How to Install the 15/25/35PCJ1 Series Straight Cable Joint

This guide provides detailed instructions for installing the 15/25/35PCJ1 series straight joint, a permanent, fully shielded, and submersible solution for connecting aluminum to aluminum or aluminum to copper wire-shielded cables. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized and follow safety protocols before beginning.

Estimated time: 2h

Tools needed:

Cable cutter, Measuring tape, Cable insulation removal tool, Insulation shield removal tool, Wire brush (for aluminum conductors), Crimping tool, Deburring tool, Cleaning supplies, T&B WT3D tool (for 35kV only)

Supplies needed:

Joint Housing, Splice (Conductor Contact), Lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), Appropriate connector (for grounding), DELTECt Cable ties (for 35kV only), #14 AWG copper wire (if shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG), Inhibitor (if using aluminum conductors)

  1. Ensure Safety and Inspect Components

DANGER: De-energize all apparatus in the work area before beginning installation. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components are compatible with the cable and mating products.

  2. Prepare Cables for Jointing

Overlap both cables and cut them to 12 inches (305mm) from the joint's centerline. Where applicable, remove the cable jacket of Cable 1 to 37 inches (940mm) and Cable 2 to 21 inches (530mm). Fold back the shield wires and then cut both cables precisely at the joint's centerline.

  3. Prepare Cable 1 and Store Joint Housing

Taper the edge of Cable 1's insulation shield from 1/2 inch to 1-1/2 inches (13mm to 38mm). Clean and lubricate the insulation shield. Lubricate the inside bore of the joint housing on both ends. Carefully slide the joint housing onto Cable 1, pushing it up to the shield wires for temporary storage.

  4. Prepare Cables for Splice Installation

Carefully remove the cable insulation and then the insulation shield from both cables according to the specified dimensions (refer to the document's 'X' and 'Y' dimensions for your conductor size). WARNING: DO NOT CUT OR NICK THE CABLE INSULATION OR CONDUCTOR during this process.

  5. Install and Crimp the Splice

If conductors are aluminum, wire-brush them thoroughly and immediately insert them into the splice. Crimp the splice following its manufacturer's recommendations. Wipe off any excess inhibitor. Check the distance between cable insulations against the 'Max Check After' dimension; redo if it exceeds. Remove any sharp protrusions or burrs generated during crimping and ensure all metal chips are cleared from the assembly area. Clean and lubricate the cables where indicated, building up lubricant at the edge of the insulation shield.

  6. Position the Joint Housing

Slide the joint housing into its final position over the splice. Ensure proper positioning by observing and equalizing the deformation of the joint ends caused by the underlying cable insulation shield.

  7. Install 35kV Specific Components (If Applicable)

FOR 35kV ONLY: Install two DELTECt Cable ties on each end of the cable entrance. Place the outer ties approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) from the splice edge, and the second ties approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) from the first, offsetting their locking heads. Use a T&B WT3D tool (not included) to tighten and trim the ties. Remove and discard the yellow pin from the joint grounding eye.

  8. Complete Grounding and Jacket Reconstruction

Retrain the shield wires and secure them to the ends of the joint. Insert one shield wire from Cable 1 (if #14 AWG or larger) through the joint grounding eye, and repeat for Cable 2. If shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG, use a separate #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent. Connect the joint grounding wires and remaining shield wires using an appropriate connector. Finally, reconstruct the cable jacket (where applicable) over both cables and the joint housing.
