How to Install 274J Series Loadbreak Junctions
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the universal mounting and initial setup of 274J2, 274J3, and 274J4 two-, three-, and four-point loadbreak junctions on flat or curved surfaces. All apparatus must be de-energized during installation.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Screwdriver, Wire strippers
Supplies needed:
Mounting bolts, Grounding wire, Elastimold 273DR insulated caps (if needed), Mating loadbreak connectors
- Prepare Mounting Brackets and Mark Location
Loosely attach the universal mounting brackets to the junction back plate. Position the assembly against the desired mounting surface (flat or curved), adjust the brackets for proper alignment, and mark the locations for drilling the mounting holes on the wall. Ensure all apparatus is de-energized.
- Mount Brackets to Wall
Detach the universal mounting brackets from the junction back plate. Securely mount the brackets to the wall using user-supplied bolts, aligning them with the marks made in Step 1. Ensure the brackets are firmly attached and can be inverted to adjust bolt center distances if needed.
- Attach Junction to Brackets
With the universal mounting brackets securely fastened to the wall, attach the junction back plate (with the junction already attached) to the mounting brackets. Verify that the parking stands are in the upright position before proceeding.
- Adjust Mounting Angle
Adjust the junction's mounting angle to the desired position. The angle is adjustable from 0 to 90 degrees above or below the horizontal in 15-degree increments.
- Secure All Bolts
Tighten all bolts securely to assure no movement of the junction assembly during operation. This ensures stability and proper function.
- Ground the Back Plate
Connect a grounding wire to the provided grounding lug on the back plate. The grounding lug accommodates wire sizes from No. 10 Solid to No. 1 Stranded. Ensure a secure and proper ground connection.
- Prepare and Install Mating Products
Thoroughly wipe the bushing interface clean of any contaminants. Apply the supplied lubricant to the interface. Install the appropriate mating products, such as Elastimold 25kV class loadbreak connectors, to the bushing inserts following their specific installation instructions.
- Verify Seating Indication
After installing an insulated cap or elbow, verify proper seating. Complete assembly is indicated by no portion of the yellow band being visible when viewed from the side. This yellow band also provides vents for improved switching performance.
- Install Insulated Caps on Unused Interfaces
WARNING: If all operating interfaces are not utilized, an Elastimold 273DR insulated cap MUST be installed on each unused interface before energization. DO NOT use the protective shipping covers for this function, as they are not insulated and are only intended to keep surfaces clean during handling.
