How to Install the Elastimold 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the Elastimold 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector, including cable preparation, assembly, and grounding procedures.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe wrench, Crimp tool (specific to compression lug), Wire brush, Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Hotstick (for final connection and operation), Suitable capacitive sensing device
Supplies needed:
Elastimold 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector Kit (includes housing, compression lug, probe, lubricant), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire (for grounding), Appropriate connector (for neutral wires), Cold shrink sealing kit (e.g., 200ECS, 200ECS-G1, 200ECS-G2, if applicable), Conductive copper tape (if using 200ECS-G2 kit), Vinyl tape (if using jacketed cable with drain wires)
- Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Safety Measures
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting installation. Do not touch or move energized products. Verify that the installation will be performed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Inspect all parts for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with the cable and mating products. Check package contents for completeness. Thread the probe into the compression lug by hand to ensure threads are free of damage. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare the Cable for Termination
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for future operation. Cut the cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. Based on your cable type (non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), follow the specific instructions in the product manual for removing the outer jacket, unwrapping neutral/ground wires, and preparing the shield. If using a cold shrink sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable, loose end first, before proceeding. Remove the insulation shield and insulation 2-1/8” (55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8” (175mm) from the cable end, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared cut. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8” (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Install the Compression Lug
Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately before installation. Install the compression lug onto the prepared conductor. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor evenly. Position the compression lug so that the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart provided with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector Housing
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful. Keep the insulation clean. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion until it is fully seated. Wipe off any excess lubricant from the exterior of the elbow and cable. Align the elbow connector with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. The probe should turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied probe wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Ground the Elbow Connector
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist the wire tightly, taking care not to damage the grounding eye. For concentric neutral cables, twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the ground and neutral wires to allow for future elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to the instructions provided with that kit to complete the grounding installation.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug
CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding with this connection. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Using a full insulated "hotstick" type tool, securely fasten it to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2” (50mm) into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT HOLD IN THE PARTIALLY INSERTED POSITION. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
- Perform Voltage Test (for 262LR only)
Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Test with a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. To prevent serious or fatal injury, treat the elbow as energized until the "no voltage" test point indication is confirmed by other means. Contamination, moisture, dirt, or incorrect equipment can provide a false "no voltage" indication. After testing, clean the inside surface of the cap, lubricate with silicone lubricant (supplied), and replace it on the test point.
