How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, elbow assembly, and grounding procedures.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool (specific to compression lug), Hotstick, Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers
Supplies needed:
Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Wire connectors (for neutral connection), Vinyl tape (if using jacketed cable with drain wires), Optional: Sealing kit components (e.g., cold shrink tube, conductive copper tape)
- Perform Initial Safety Checks and Cable Training
DANGER: Confirm all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Do not touch or move energized products in the work area. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components are compatible and fit properly with your cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug by hand to check for free movement; replace any damaged components if resistance is encountered. Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack (24 to 36 inches or 610 to 914mm) beyond the bushing centerline for ease of operation.
- Prepare Cable Jacket and Neutral Wires
Cut the cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. For non-jacketed concentric neutral cable, bind the neutrals 7-3/4 to 8 inches (195 to 203mm) back from the bushing center and unwrap neutral wires to the binding. For jacketed concentric neutral cable, remove the outer jacket 9-5/8 inches (240mm) back from the bushing centerline and unwrap neutral wires past the bushing centerline. For jacketed cable with drain wires, remove 9-5/8 inches (240mm) of the outer jacket, unwrap drain wires, bind them, fold them back, and wrap vinyl tape around the cable covering the wire ends. For jacketed copper tape shield cable, remove 9-5/8 inches (240mm) of the outer jacket and 7-1/8 inches (180mm) of the copper tape shield; wrap conductive copper tape (if supplied with kit) over the end of the copper shield to hold it in place. If using a cold shrink sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable, loose end first.
- Prepare Conductor and Insulation
Remove the shield and insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug starting at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excess inhibitor from the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8 inches (175mm) from the end of the main insulation. Bevel the insulation end 1/8 inch (5mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Keep insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Complete Grounding and Neutral Connection
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions to complete the installation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
DANGER: CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before connecting. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock. DO NOT HOLD IN THE PARTIALLY INSERTED POSITION.
