How to Install the 252LRJS Deadbreak Elbow Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 252LRJS Deadbreak Elbow Connector, including cable preparation, assembly, and connection to a deadbreak bushing.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Hotstick, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers, Utility knife
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant, Hold-down Bail, Mastic, Vinyl tape, No. 14 AWG Copper Wire, Appropriate grounding connector, UD cable
- Prepare for Installation and Safety Checks
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility. Check package contents for completeness. Verify elbow housing cable entrance size and compression lug size for proper cable fit. Check probe threads by threading the probe into the compression lug; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. If the test point cap is not installed, lubricate the cap and test point, then install the cap. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness.
- Train and Prepare Cable
Train the UD cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. Ensure an extra length of concentric neutral wires or grounding braid (24-26 inches beyond the bushing centerline) is available for hotstick operation and neutral connection. Unwrap the neutral wires back past the bushing centerline. Cut the excess cable squarely at the bushing centerline. Wrap one strip of mastic, stretching slightly, around the cable jacket. Bend all neutral wires straight back over the mastic and along the cable, pressing them into the mastic. Wrap a second strip of mastic completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the imbedded neutral wires. Use a third strip if needed to build up the outer diameter, then cover all mastic with vinyl tape. Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Position the compression lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the documentation, and bevel the insulation end by 1/8 inch maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble Elbow Connector
Clean and lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess silicone lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. Tighten the probe with the wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Concentric Neutral and Bail
Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs or rolling the seal down. Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG copper wire (or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. Place the hold-down bail in the hold-down bracket.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
DANGER: LUBRICATE ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing, then lubricate with the supplied lubricant. Use a fully insulated hot stick to place the elbow on the bushing. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. DO NOT SEPARATE IF ENERGIZED.
- Secure Elbow with Bail
Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown or top of the elbow so that the eyebolt on the bail is directly over the operating eye. Tighten down on the elbow locator by turning the eyebolt in a clockwise direction. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt until it allows the eyebolt to seat securely in the locator. The nut should act as a stop to prevent the eyebolt from applying excessive force on the elbow. Once the nut is in its final position, it will not need to be readjusted when removing and replacing the elbow.
