How to Install the K151SP Straight Plug
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for preparing the cable, assembling the K151SP Straight Plug, and connecting it to a mating receptacle for 15kV and 25kV class systems. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before starting.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tool, Wire stripping tool, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Rag
Supplies needed:
K151SP Straight Plug kit (includes plug, conductor contact, nylon venting rod, lubricant), Solid dielectric type cable, Approved solvent, ELASTIMOLD bail, #14 AWG copper wire (if not using ELASTIMOLD grounding device), Sealing material (for grounding wires)
- De-energize and Prepare for Installation
DANGER: Ensure all electrical apparatus are de-energized before beginning installation or removal of any parts. Verify the system is de-energized using appropriate safety procedures and equipment. Inspect all K151SP components for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with the cable and mating products. Gather all required tools and supplies, maintaining a clean work area.
- Prepare Cable Jacket and Shield
For Jacketed Concentric Neutral cable: Cut and remove 8 inches of the cable jacket from the cable end. Ensure sufficient concentric neutral wires remain for connection to the ground point. For Copper Tape Shield cable: Cut and remove 7-1/2 inches of the cable jacket from the cable end. Then, remove 6-1/2 inches of the copper tape shield from the end of the cable. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, refer to its specific instructions for outer jacket cut back.
- Strip Cable Insulation and Conductive Shield
Remove 7/8 inch to 1 inch of cable insulation and conductive shield. For #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid aluminum cable, remove 1-3/4 inches to 1-7/8 inches. Cut squarely; do not pencil the cut. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors immediately and insert them into the crimp barrel, which contains an inhibitor.
- Crimp Socket Terminal
Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, holding the crimp barrel firmly against the cable insulation. Refer to the crimp chart provided with the contact for specific crimping instructions. Start crimps at the crimp line imprinted on the barrel and rotate each successive crimp or indent by 90 degrees. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.
- Prepare Semi-Conductive Shield and Insulation
Temporarily remove the plastic pin from the socket. Remove the semi-conductive shield to a point 7-3/4 inches to 7-13/16 inches back from the end of the socket using a straight, smooth, squared cut. Exercise extreme care to avoid cutting or nicking the cable insulation. Replace the plastic pin. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket, and thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of semi-conducting residue by wiping with a rag wet with an approved solvent. Always wipe from the end of the cable towards the outer jacket. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it now according to its specific instructions.
- Lubricate Cable and Install Collar
Slide the collar, smaller end first, onto each cable. Refer to the bailing instruction sheet for guidance. Keep the cable insulation and plug clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as shown in the documentation and to the inside of the housing. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE with other lubricants, as they may harm the product or its mating part.
- Push Cable into Housing
Push the prepared cable firmly into the housing until the leading edge of the socket contact is flush with the front edge of the plug. Remove the plastic pin from the socket and discard it.
- Connect to Mating Receptacle
Lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1-3/4 inches deep). Ensure the nylon rod is not cut during mating, which could leave material inside the interface. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out and remove the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection using an ELASTIMOLD bail. Refer to the Bailing Instruction Sheet (150TB-4) for proper installation of the bail.
- Ground the Connector
If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of customer-supplied #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire through the grounding tab and twist it tightly. Connect the grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal all grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion and ensure long-term reliability.
