How to Install the 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the Elastimold 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector, including cable preparation, assembly, and connection to a deadbreak bushing. Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Wire strippers, Hot stick, Suitable sensing device for capacitive test points, Cable cut back template

Supplies needed:

252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector kit (Elbow Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Contact, Lubricant, Hold-down Bail), UD cable (concentric neutral and semi-con shielding), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Appropriate connector for grounding, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers), Silicone grease

  1. Perform Safety Checks and Inspect Parts

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before installation. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect parts for damage, rating, and compatibility. Remove shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before energizing. Verify package contents are complete and undamaged.

  2. Verify Cable and Lug Compatibility

Check the elbow housing cable entrance size and compression lug size for proper fit with your UD cable. Thread the probe into the compression lug by hand to check for resistance; if encountered, inspect for damage and replace the component.

  3. Train the Cable

Train the UD cable as shown to ease operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches (508.0mm) beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut any excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing.

  4. Prepare the Cable End

Use a cable cut back template. Unwrap and bind concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches (216.0mm) back from the cable end. Remove shield and insulation squarely, avoiding nicks. Bevel insulation end max 1/8 inch (3.2mm). Thoroughly clean insulation to remove all conductive residue.

  5. Install the Compression Lug

Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Position lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp according to chart, starting at crimp line and rotating 180 degrees each crimp. Wipe excessive inhibitor from lug and cable.

  6. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Clean and lubricate cable insulation and inside elbow housing with supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide elbow connector onto cable with twisting motion. Wipe off excess lubricant. Align elbow with compression lug's threaded hole. Thread probe into lug by hand, then tighten with wrench until it bends.

  7. Install the Hold-down Bail

Place the hold-down bail into the hold-down bracket. Compress the bail and insert it securely into the brackets.

  8. Connect the Concentric Neutral Wires

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly. Twist all concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation.

  9. Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug

Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing. Lubricate both surfaces with the supplied lubricant ONLY IF the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Use a fully insulated hot stick to place the elbow onto the bushing. DANGER: Do not operate by hand or separate if energized.

  10. Secure the Elbow with the Bail

Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown of the elbow so the eyebolt is directly over the operating eye. Tighten the eyebolt by turning it clockwise. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt to seat it securely in the locator, acting as a stop to prevent excessive force. Once set, the nut will not need readjustment.

  11. Perform a Voltage Test (Optional)

If equipped, remove the test point cap with a hot stick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: This is a capacitance device; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device for capacitive test points to determine if energized. Treat as energized until confirmed otherwise. After testing, clean, lubricate with silicone grease, and replace the cap.
