How to Install 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and assembly of the 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector, including cable preparation, crimping, and connection to a 25kV class deadbreak bushing.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Hot stick, Cable cut back template
Supplies needed:
Lubricant (supplied with kit), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) Copper Wire, Appropriate grounding connector
- Ensure Safety and Conduct Pre-Installation Checks
Before beginning, ensure all apparatus are de-energized. Inspect all parts for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Verify the elbow housing cable entrance size and compression lug size match your cable. Check the probe threads by hand-threading it into the compression lug; replace if resistance is encountered prior to full assembly. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure. If the test point cap is not installed, lubricate and install it.
- Train and Cut the Cable
Train the UD cable to ease operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches (508.0mm) extends beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut any excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing.
- Prepare the Cable End
Using a cable cut back template for dimensional guidance, unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches (216.0mm) back from the cable end. Carefully remove the shield and insulation, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Ensure the lug's threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore and crimp according to the lug's instructions, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Wipe off excess inhibitor. Remove the semi-con shield and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (3.2mm). Finally, thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all conductive residue.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Clean and lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Hand-thread the probe into the lug, ensuring not to cross-thread, then tighten with the wrench until the wrench bends.
- Install the Hold-Down Bail
Place the hold-down bail into the hold-down bracket, compressing the bail and inserting it securely into the brackets.
- Connect Concentric Neutral to Ground
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly. Twist all concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Bushing
Clean and lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant, but only if the transformer and elbow are confirmed to be de-energized. Using a fully insulated hot stick, carefully place the elbow onto the bushing. Never operate by hand or attempt to separate if energized.
- Secure Elbow with Hold-Down Bail
Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown of the elbow so the eyebolt is directly over the operating eye. Tighten the elbow locator by turning the eyebolt clockwise. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt to ensure it seats securely in the locator, acting as a stop to prevent excessive force on the elbow.
- Perform Voltage Test (Optional)
To check for voltage, remove the test point cap with a hot stick, peeling it off at an angle. Use only a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points, following its manufacturer's instructions, as conventional voltage measuring equipment is not appropriate. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means due to potential false readings. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
