How to Install the 252LRJS Deadbreak Elbow Connector
A comprehensive guide for installing the 252LRJS Deadbreak Elbow Connector, including cable preparation, assembly, and connection to a 25kV class deadbreak bushing or accessory device.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Hot stick, Wire strippers
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied), Hold-down Bail, Mastic strips (3), Vinyl tape, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) Copper Wire, Appropriate connector for grounding
- De-energize and Inspect Components
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all kit components (Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Wrench, Lubricant, Hold-down Bail) for damage and compatibility. Verify elbow housing cable entrance and compression lug sizes fit your cable. Hand-thread the probe into the lug to check threads; replace damaged parts if resistance is met. Ensure the test point cap is installed, lubricated, and seated.
- Prepare the Cable
Train the cable to provide 24-26 inches of slack beyond the bushing centerline for operation and neutral connection. Unwrap neutral wires past the bushing centerline. Cut excess cable squarely at the bushing centerline. Wrap one mastic strip around the jacket, stretching slightly. Bend neutral wires back over mastic, pressing them in. Wrap a second mastic strip over the jacket, overlapping neutral wires; use a third if needed for build-up. Cover all mastic with vinyl tape. Carefully remove insulation shield and insulation (7-3/4” to 8” for shield, 6-7/8” for insulation) squarely, avoiding nicks. Bevel insulation end 1/8” max. Thoroughly clean insulation.
- Install the Compression Lug
Immediately wire brush bare aluminum conductors. Install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so its threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug using the recommended tool and chart, starting at the crimp line and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the lug and cable.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Clean and lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion until fully seated. Wipe off excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Hand-thread the probe into the lug, avoiding cross-threading. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral
Pull the elbow's hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable. Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly. Twist all concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing and Secure with Bail
DANGER: Confirm the transformer and mating bushing are de-energized. Clean and lubricate the elbow connector's receptacle and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Using a fully insulated hot stick, carefully place the elbow onto the bushing. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. NEVER SEPARATE AN ENERGIZED ELBOW. Place the hold-down bail in its bracket. Pull the bail up over the elbow's crown so the eyebolt aligns with the operating eye. Tighten the eyebolt clockwise into the locator. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt to securely seat it without applying excessive force.
