How to Install the 168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connector
This guide details the installation of the 167RLR/168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connector, converting a livefront termination to deadfront for UD cable with concentric neutral and extruded insulation shielding. It provides an operating interface for 15kV class loadbreak bushings.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable cutter, Cable insulation stripper, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Probe wrench, Wire strippers, Measuring tape, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device for capacitive test points
Supplies needed:
167RLR or 168RLR Replacement Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied with kit), Hose Clamp, No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire, Appropriate ground connector, Silicone grease, Cleaning cloth
- Review and De-energize Apparatus
Read all installation instructions thoroughly. Check the package contents to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Inspect all components for proper fit with the cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by threading the probe into the compression lug; if resistance is encountered, replace the damaged component. DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting installation or removal of parts. This product must only be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices.
- Remove Livefront Termination
Remove the rubber cap from the existing terminator. Cut off the connector at the top of the terminator. Disconnect the ground lead from the base of the terminator. Carefully remove the terminator housing from the cable.
- Prepare Cable for Installation
Train the cable to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Measure and cut the cable to 10-1/2 inches from the bushing centerline. Check the insulation shield distance: if it measures less than 6-1/2 inches, proceed; if greater, consult your ELASTIMOLD representative. Remove 1-3/8 inches of cable insulation from the end, cutting squarely. DO NOT NICK THE CONDUCTOR during this process.
- Install Compression Lug
Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart provided with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Assemble Elbow Housing
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE with other lubricants, as they may be harmful. Keep the insulation clean of dirt and grime, and do not introduce excess grease into the gap between the lug and insulation. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Concentric Neutral
Using a separate No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. Add the supplied hose clamp as shown in the documentation and tighten it snugly, but DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. LUBRICATE ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. DANGER: DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Use a full insulated hotstick type live-line tool for connection. Remove the insulated cap from the bushing by attaching a hotstick tool to its pulling eye. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Place the elbow connector receptacle over the bushing plug, inserting the male contact until the first slight resistance is felt (contacts are approximately 2 inches apart). Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow and bushing interface.
- Perform Voltage Test (168RLR ONLY)
WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is NOT directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an an angle rather than pulling directly. Test with a suitable sensing device, made for use with separable connectors manufactured with capacitive test points, to determine if the cable is energized. WARNING: Contamination, moisture, dirt, or incorrect measuring equipment can provide a false 'no voltage' indication. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious or fatal injury. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
