How to Install and Operate 167RLR/168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors

This guide provides instructions for installing and operating the 167RLR/168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors, converting livefront terminations to deadfront for UD cables. It covers cable preparation, assembly, and connection to 15kV class loadbreak bushings.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe wrench, Wire brush, Hotstick (insulated live-line tool), Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Suitable capacitive voltage sensing device (for 168RLR)

Supplies needed:

167RLR or 168RLR Replacement Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Elastimold Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Hose Clamp, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Grounding connector, Test point cap (for 168RLR, if not already on the unit)

  1. Perform Safety and Pre-Installation Checks

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. This product should only be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Verify all package contents are complete and undamaged. Check all components for proper fit with the cable and/or mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for resistance; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. Gather all required tools and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Remove Existing Livefront Terminator

Remove the rubber cap from the existing terminator. Cut off the connector at the top of the terminator. Disconnect the ground lead from the base of the terminator. Carefully remove the terminator housing from the cable.

  3. Prepare the Cable

Train the cables to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Cut the cable to a precise length of 10-1/2 inches from the bushing centerline. Remove 1-3/8 inches of cable insulation from the end, ensuring the cut is square and that the conductor is not nicked.

  4. Install the Compression Lug

Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor thoroughly. Immediately install the compression lug onto the conductor, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart provided with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.

  5. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied Elastimold lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back and forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with a wrench until the wrench bends.

  6. Connect the Concentric Neutral

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tight, ensuring not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, providing adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. Add the supplied hose clamp as shown in the documentation and tighten it snugly, but do not overtighten.

  7. Connect the Elbow to the Bushing (Loadmake Operation)

DANGER: Ensure both the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized before proceeding with lubrication. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Place the elbow connector receptacle over the bushing plug, inserting the elbow male contact (arc follower portion) into the bushing until the first slight resistance is felt (contacts are approximately 2 inches apart). Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow and bushing interface. Apply sufficient force to ensure the internal lock engages.

  8. Perform Voltage Test (168RLR ONLY)

WARNING: This step applies only to the 168RLR model. The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly in line. Test with a suitable sensing device, made for use with separable connectors manufactured with capacitive test points, following the manufacturer’s directions, to determine if the cable is energized. Contamination or incorrect equipment can provide a false 'no voltage' indication; treat the elbow as energized until confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it tightly on the test point.
