What is the current rating of the elbow connectors?
The elbow connectors are rated for 200 A loadbreak applications.
What voltage classes do these connectors support?
The ABB Elastimold loadbreak repair and replacement elbows are available for 15 kV and 25 kV voltage classes.
How much length does the repair elbow add?
The repair elbow features an extended housing and compression lug length that is 3 1/4 inches longer than the standard elbow.
How much length does the replacement elbow add?
The replacement elbow extends its housing and compression lug length to 8 7/8 inches over the standard elbow.
What material are the elbows constructed from?
The elbows are constructed from specially formulated, non-rigid ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber.
Are these elbow connectors certified?
Yes, these connectors are IEEE 386 compliant, ANSI certified, and Rural Utilities Service (RUS) accepted.
Where are Elastimold elbows manufactured?
Elastimold 200 A repair and replacement elbows are designed, molded, and tested in Albuquerque, NM, USA.
What is the test point cap catalog number?
The test point cap catalog number for elbows with a test point is 156-7.
Can these elbows be used for voltage testing?
Yes, models with an optional built-in capacitive test point allow testing of the circuit for the presence of voltage.
What is the primary use of these elbow connectors?
These elbow connectors are primarily used to transition from live-front to dead-front equipment, especially when replacing switchgear and transformers.
How to Install the 168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connector, converting a livefront termination to deadfront for UD cable. Ensure all safety precautions are followed.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Hotstick, Wire strippers, Cutting tool, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points)
Supplies needed:
Replacement Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Hose Clamp, No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire (or equivalent), Appropriate ground connector, Silicone grease
- De-energize Apparatus and Remove Livefront Termination
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Remove the rubber cap from the terminator. Cut off the existing connector at the top of the terminator. Disconnect the ground lead from the base of the terminator. Finally, remove the terminator housing from the cable.
- Prepare the Cable
Train the cables to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Measure and cut the cable to 10-1/2 inches from the bushing centerline. If the insulation shield measures less than 6-1/2 inches, proceed. If it's greater, consult an ELASTIMOLD representative. Carefully remove 1-3/8 inches of cable insulation from the end, ensuring a square cut and avoiding nicks to the conductor.
- Install the Compression Lug
Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor thoroughly and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Refer to the crimp chart supplied with the lug for recommended crimp information, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Assemble the Elbow Housing
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. The probe should turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with a wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. Add the supplied hose clamp as shown in the diagram and tighten it snugly, but do not overtighten.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. After establishing firm footing and positive control, place the elbow connector receptacle area over the bushing plug, inserting the elbow male contact until slight resistance is felt. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow and bushing interface. Apply sufficient force to ensure the internal lock engages.
- Perform Voltage Test (168RLR Only)
WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. Use a suitable sensing device, made for use with separable connectors with capacitive test points, to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it tightly on the test point.
