How to Install Elastimold 375LR/376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Elastimold 375LR and 376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, assembly, and initial connection to a bushing.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Wire strippers, Hotstick (for operation and final connection), Suitable sensing device (for 376LR voltage test point)

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), UD cable, No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire (for grounding), Appropriate grounding connector, Insulated cap or connector (if replacing shipping covers), Silicone grease (for test point cap)

  1. Ensure Safety and Inspect Components

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. Confirm the circuit is de-energized. Inspect the contents of the package to ensure all components (Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Wrench, Lubricant) are complete and undamaged. Check all components for proper fit with the cable and/or mating products. Verify the probe threads by threading it into the compression lug; it should turn freely without resistance. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Train and Cut Cable

Train the UD cable as shown in the documentation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer to ease future operation. Carefully cut the excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing.

  3. Prepare Cable - Neutral and Shield

Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches back from the end of the cable. Remove the insulation shield (6-7/8 inches) and the primary insulation (2-1/8 inches) from the cable end, cutting squarely. Take extreme care not to cut or nick the conductor or the remaining insulation. Bevel the end of the remaining insulation a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  4. Install Compression Lug

Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors immediately after preparation. Install the compression lug onto the conductor, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so that the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Refer to the crimp chart packaged with the compression lug for recommended crimp tool information. Start the crimp at the crimp line mark and rotate 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.

  5. Assemble Elbow Housing and Probe

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant ONLY. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful. Keep the insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  6. Connect Concentric Neutral

Using a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires to allow for elbow operation.

  7. Prepare for Connection to Bushing Plug

LUBRICATE ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the lubricant supplied. If the product was supplied with a protective shipping cover, remove it and replace it with the appropriate HV insulated cap or connector before submerging or energizing the circuit.

  8. Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug

WARNING: Loadbreak connectors must be operated with a full insulated “hotstick” type live-line tool. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. After establishing firm footing and positive control, insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, applying sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface.
