Overview

The ABB 164BSOP is a 200 Amp, 15kV double parking stand bushing designed for medium-voltage electrical power distribution systems. This fully shielded, submersible bushing provides a critical interface point for connecting equipment to the electrical grid, ensuring safe and reliable power transfer in 15kV class loadbreak systems. Engineered to meet ANSI/IEEE Standard 386, the 164BSOP delivers 200A continuous current with 10kA symmetrical momentary and fault close ratings. Its adjustable bracket allows precise left/right positioning and feed-thru tilt for optimal alignment with associated conductors or cables. The bushing is compatible with 15kV class elbow connectors, including Elastimold® models, and supports testing, grounding, and isolation when used with accessories like the 370TR test rod, 160GLR grounding elbow, or 160DR insulated cap. With a maximum phase-to-ground operating voltage of 8.3kV and phase-to-phase voltage of 14.4kV, this bushing is ideal for substations, industrial facilities, and utility distribution networks requiring dependable medium-voltage connections. The peroxide-cured insulation and jacket ensure long-term performance in demanding environments.

How to Install and Remove the 160DRG/167DRG Insulated Cap

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and removal of the ELASTIMOLD 160DRG and 167DRG Insulated Caps with Ground Lead on 15kV class loadbreak bushing interfaces.

Estimated time: 15m

Tools needed:

Hotstick, Wire strippers

Supplies needed:

160DRG or 167DRG Insulated Cap with Ground Lead, Lubricant (supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved)

  1. De-energize Apparatus and Inspect Components

Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Inspect the insulated cap, ground lead, and mating bushing for any damage, and verify compatibility and proper rating. Confirm all package contents are complete.

  2. Connect Electrostatic Grounding Wire

Connect the free end of the electrostatic grounding wire to the system ground. Leave sufficient slack to allow for hot-stick operation of the insulated cap. CAUTION: Train the grounding wire to prevent it from contacting the bushing interface during operation.

  3. Prepare Insulated Cap for Installation

Remove the protective cover from the insulated cap. Lubricate the cap’s internal mating surface using only the supplied lubricant or an ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant. Do not substitute. Ensure the internal mating surface remains free from dirt and grime.

  4. Install Insulated Cap onto Bushing

Firmly attach an eight-foot long, fully insulated hotstick to the insulated cap's pulling eye. Insert the male contact of the insulated cap into the loadbreak bushing. Push the cap home with a fast, firm, straight motion, ensuring it is fully mated and the locking ring is securely seated. Detach the hotstick from the insulated cap.

  5. Remove Insulated Cap (Optional)

To remove the insulated cap, first attach an eight-foot long, fully insulated hotstick to the pulling eye. While the cap is still mated, rotate it slightly clockwise to break any surface friction. Pull the cap off the bushing with a fast, firm, straight motion. Remove the electrostatic grounding wire from the system ground. Replace the protective cover on the insulated cap to keep its internal surface clean.
