How to Install a Deadbreak Junction with Universal Mount

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing a two-, three-, or four-point deadbreak junction using the universal mount method. It covers mounting, assembly, grounding, and initial preparation for operation of the K650J2SP series.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Wrench, Drill, Wire strippers

Supplies needed:

Deadbreak Junction (K650J2SP series), Base Bracket, Base Plate, Universal Brackets (4), Mounting fasteners (user-supplied, for surface attachment), 3/8 inch hex head cap screws, 3/8 inch external tooth lock washers, 3/8 inch hex nuts, 1/2 inch hex head cap screws, 1/2 inch split lock washers, 1/2 inch hex nuts, Grounding wire (No. 2 solid to 1/0 stranded), ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant, HV insulated caps (for unused bushings)

  1. Determine Mounting Location and Mark Slots

Identify the desired location for the junction assembly. Use the base plate as a template to mark the slot locations on the mounting surface where the junction is to be mounted.

  2. Attach Initial Universal Brackets

Secure two universal brackets to the marked flat surface using suitable fasteners. Tighten them securely to ensure no movement during operation. All apparatus must be de-energized during installation.

  3. Attach Remaining Universal Brackets

Attach the remaining two universal brackets to the two brackets already mounted on the surface at the desired angle. Use the supplied 3/8 inch hex head cap screws, external tooth lock washers, and hex nuts. Tighten securely.

  4. Assemble Deadbreak Junction to Base Bracket

Assemble the deadbreak junction to the base bracket assembly and base plate. Use two 1/2 inch hex head cap screws, two 1/2 inch split lock washers, and two 1/2 inch hex nuts, attaching them to the center mounting holes on the bracket assembly. Tighten securely.

  5. Attach Junction Assembly to Universal Brackets

Attach the complete deadbreak junction assembly to the universal brackets using the supplied 1/2 inch hex head cap screws, split lock washers, and hex nuts. Ensure the parking stand is in the upright position and tighten all hardware securely.

  6. Ground the Junction Assembly

Ground the base bracket assembly and the junction's black conductive jacket. A grounding lug is provided on the base bracket for this purpose, accommodating wire sizes from No. 2 solid to 1/0 stranded. Connect the appropriate grounding wire to ensure safety.

  7. Prepare Operating Interfaces

Remove all protective shipping caps from the operating interfaces and thoroughly clean them. Lubricate each interface with an ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE, as other lubricants may be harmful to this product or its mating product(s).

  8. Install Insulated Caps on Unused Bushings

If not all operating interfaces will be utilized, install appropriate HV insulated caps on any unused bushings before energizing the circuit. Do not use the protective shipping caps for this function, as they are not insulated and are only for handling and installation.
