How to Install Elastimold 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Elastimold 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors on various UD cables, including cable preparation, lug attachment, elbow assembly, and grounding.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Cable cutting tools, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wrench (for probe), Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for 162LR voltage test)
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate ground connector, Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kit), Conductive copper tape (if using copper tape shield kit), Vinyl tape, Silicone lubricant (for test point cap)
- De-energize and Inspect Components
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation or removal of parts, except for test point caps and indicators. Failure to follow these instructions will result in serious or fatal injury. Inspect all package contents to confirm they are complete and undamaged. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by hand-threading the probe into the compression lug; it should turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare Cable Outer Jacket and Neutral/Shield
Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. Based on your specific cable type (non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), prepare the outer jacket and neutral/shield according to the provided diagrams and measurements in the full instructions. For example, remove 9-5/8 inches (240mm) of the outer jacket for jacketed cables. For copper tape shield cables, remove 7-1/8 inches (180mm) of the copper tape shield and wrap conductive copper tape over the end. If using a cold shrink sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable, loose end first.
- Prepare Conductor and Insulation, Install Compression Lug
Remove the shield and insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors thoroughly and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart supplied with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8 inches (175mm) back from the cable end. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Assemble Elbow Housing and Probe
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. The probe should turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Ground the Elbow Connector
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist the wire tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires to allow for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a full insulated 'hotstick' type live-line tool to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion. Use sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
- Perform Voltage Test (162LR Only)
If installing a 162LR connector with a test point, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points and follow its manufacturer's directions. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious injury. After testing, clean the inside surface of the cap, lubricate with silicone lubricant, and replace it on the test point.
