How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors on various UD cables, including cable preparation, lug attachment, elbow assembly, grounding, and final connection to a de-energized bushing.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimp tool (specific to compression lug), Probe wrench (supplied with kit), Hotstick, Measuring tape, Utility knife
Supplies needed:
161LR or 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector Kit (includes housing, probe, lubricant), Compression Lug (appropriate for cable), No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm Copper Ground Wire, Appropriate connector for neutral wires, Cleaning solution and wipes, Vinyl tape (if applicable for cable type), Conductive copper tape (if applicable for cable type)
- Prepare the Cable
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. Select the appropriate cable preparation method based on your cable type (Non-Jacketed Concentric Neutral, Jacketed Concentric Neutral, Jacketed Cable with Drain Wires, or Jacketed Copper Tape Shield Cable). Follow the specific instructions for training, stripping, and cutting the cable to the required dimensions, ensuring adequate slack. Remove the shield and insulation 2-1/8” (55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8” (175mm) back from the end, and bevel the insulation end 1/8” (5mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Install the Compression Lug
Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately after stripping. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the instructions provided with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Ground the Elbow Connector
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. If the elbow was preordered with a ground wire, continue to the next step. For concentric neutral cables, twist all neutral wires and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing
DANGER: CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Using a full insulated hotstick tool, operate the elbow to connect it to the bushing. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
