How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Elastimold 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors on various UD cables, including cable preparation, lug installation, elbow assembly, and grounding.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hotstick, Probe wrench
Supplies needed:
Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate connector (for neutral to ground), Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kit), Conductive copper tape (if using sealing kit), Vinyl tape (if binding drain wires)
- Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Cable Training
Before starting, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Inspect all package contents and components for completeness, damage, and proper fit with the cable and mating products. Read the entire instructions. Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for operation. Depending on your cable type (non-jacketed, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), follow the specific instructions in the documentation to prepare the neutral/drain wires and remove the outer jacket. Cut the excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Failure to follow these instructions will result in serious or fatal injury. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment.
- Prepare Cable End and Install Compression Lug
Remove the insulation shield and insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush any bare aluminum conductors thoroughly and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart provided with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the cable cut-back diagram, and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful. Keep the insulation clean. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. The probe should turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Grounding Wires
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. If the elbow was preordered with a ground wire, proceed to the next step. For concentric neutral cables, twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to the instructions supplied with that kit to complete the grounding installation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. DANGER: Confirm that the transformer and elbow are de-energized. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Use a full insulated 'hotstick' type tool.
