How to Install Elastimold 161LRJS/162LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Elastimold 161LRJS and 162LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors on UD cable, covering cable preparation, elbow assembly, and neutral connection.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Wire strippers, Cable cutting tool, Hotstick (for operation)
Supplies needed:
161LRJS or 162LRJS Elbow Connector Kit (includes housing, compression lug, probe, lubricant, 3 sealing strips), Separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate ground connector, Vinyl tape, UD cable
- Prepare the Cable
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation. Train the UD cable to provide 24-26 inches of slack beyond the bushing centerline. Remove the outer jacket 7 3/4 to 8 inches back. Unwrap neutral wires past the centerline and cut the cable squarely. Wrap one mastic strip around the jacket, embed neutral wires, then wrap a second (and third if needed) mastic strip, covering with vinyl tape. Remove insulation shield and insulation, then wire brush bare aluminum conductors. Immediately install the compression lug, aligning its threaded hole with the bushing bore, and crimp it according to the chart. Bevel the insulation end 1/8 inch maximum and thoroughly clean the insulation.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral
Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs or rolling the seal down. Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow, twisting it tightly without damaging the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for future elbow operation.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. WARNING: Lubricate only if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Do not operate by hand; use a fully insulated hotstick type live-line tool as per operating instructions to securely connect the elbow to the bushing.
