How to Install Elastimold 273RLR/274RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors
This guide details the installation of Elastimold 273RLR/274RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors, converting livefront terminations to deadfront for UD cables. It covers cable preparation, elbow assembly, and connection to 25kV class loadbreak bushings.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device for capacitive test points
Supplies needed:
273RLR/274RLR Replacement Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Elastimold-supplied Lubricant, Hose Clamp, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Ground connector, Silicone grease
- Prepare for Installation and De-energize Apparatus
Before starting, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Verify package contents are complete and undamaged. Check all components for proper fit with the cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for resistance; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Remove Existing Livefront Terminator
Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during this process. Remove the rubber cap from the existing terminator. Cut off the connector at the top of the terminator. Disconnect the ground lead from the base of the terminator. Finally, remove the terminator housing from the cable.
- Prepare the Cable for Connection
Train the cable to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Measure and cut the cable to 10-1/2 inches from the bushing centerline. Remove 1-3/8 inches of cable insulation from the end, cutting squarely. Do not nick the conductor. If the insulation shield measures greater than 6-1/2 inches from the end of the cut cable, consult an ELASTIMOLD representative.
- Install and Crimp the Compression Lug
Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart packaged with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector and Probe
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute, as other lubricants may be harmful. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with a wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Concentric Neutral and Ground
Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, providing adequate slack for elbow operation. Add the supplied hose clamp and tighten it snugly, but do not overtighten.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug (De-energized)
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant ONLY IF the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Do not operate by hand. Use a hotstick tool to remove any insulated cap from the bushing. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Withdraw the elbow from the apparatus parking stand with a fast, straight, firm motion. Place the elbow connector receptacle over the bushing plug, inserting the male contact until the first slight resistance is felt. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock.
- Perform Voltage Test (274RLR Only)
If using the 274RLR, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly in line. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device made for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until the “no voltage” indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
