Overview

The ABB Installation Products 15PCJ2G1230 15kV Power Cable Joint is a fully shielded, fully submersible, straight transition splice designed for medium-voltage applications. This Style 2 joint features a universal housing with separate cable adapters, enabling reliable termination of aluminum conductors with insulation diameters between 0.760 inches and 0.950 inches. The joint accommodates both stranded #1 and solid 1/0 AWG conductor sizes, providing a precise fit for medium-voltage power distribution systems. Engineered to meet IEEE Standard 404, the 15PCJ2G1230 delivers a 110kV BIL impulse withstand rating (1.2 x 50 microsecond wave), 35kV AC withstand, and 70kV DC withstand during manufacturing tests. Its continuous current rating matches the connected cable, with a short-time current rating up to 35kA. The molded conductive shield ensures a virtually indestructible ground shield for true deadfront construction, while the grounding eye provides a convenient connection point for grounding wires. The fully submersible molded rubber housing is designed for direct burial or vault installations, withstanding cable pulls up to 500 lbs. The pin-and-socket interlock design maintains electrical and water seal integrity at the cable entrance, eliminating the need for taping. Compatible with UD cables featuring concentric neutral and extruded insulation shielding, the joint also supports fabric tape shielded or lead-jacketed cables when used with the appropriate Elastimold cable shield adapter or grounding device. Ideal for new installations joining different cable runs or repairing broken cables in existing systems, the 15PCJ2G1230 ensures system integrity and prevents electrical faults in power distribution networks. Its universal housing reduces the need for multiple specialized components, while the separate adapters allow tailored connections to specific cable constructions. This product is essential for maintaining safe and efficient operation in industrial and utility power systems where medium-voltage transmission and distribution are required.

How to Install the 15PCJ2G1230 Straight Joint

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the permanent, fully shielded, fully submersible installation of the 15PCJ2G1230 straight joint for aluminum and/or copper conductor, wire shielded cables.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Cable stripping guide, Circular cutting tool or utility knife, Hex wrench, Wirebrush, Crimping tool

Supplies needed:

Joint Housing, Splice (Conductor Contact), Cable Adapters, Lubricant, Retaining Collars, Hose Clamp, Electrical tape, Appropriate connector (for grounding wires), #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent (if needed), Heat/cold shrink cable jacket material (if needed)

  1. Prepare for Installation and Install Housing

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Failure to follow instructions will result in damage or serious injury. Begin by checking all package contents for completeness and damage, ensuring proper fit with cables. Read all instructions before starting. Examine mating cable ends for moisture and contaminants. Remove graphite coatings 12 inches (30.5cm) beyond the cable jacket cut using a circular cutting tool or glass; avoid sanding. If conductors contain strand fill or water-blocking material, consult the cable manufacturer for welding/crimping procedures. Use the stripping guide to carefully remove the cable jacket of both cables for 11-1/4 inches (285.7mm). Fold back shield wires and tape their ends on Cable 1 to the jacket, allowing extra length for later rejoining. Clean the insulation shield, shield wires, and jacket for 30 inches (760mm). Slide the joint housing onto Cable 1 to a distance of 30 inches (760mm).

  2. Prepare Cable Insulation

Using the stripping guide, carefully remove the insulation shield and cable insulation. DO NOT CUT OR NICK THE INSULATION, as this could lead to assembly failure. Wrap two turns of electrical tape 1 inch (25mm) from the edge of the insulation shield on both cables to serve as a marker. Clean the cable insulation thoroughly, then lubricate it to create a build-up or ramp of lubricant at the edge of the insulation shield.

  3. Install Cable Adapters

Take one cable adapter and lubricate the inside of both ends. Install this cable adapter onto the prepared cable until it meets the tape marker. Repeat this process for the other cable adapter on the second cable.

  4. Install Retaining Collars

Select the appropriate retaining collar and partially thread the correct size setscrews (refer to instructions packaged with the collars). Position the retaining collar over the insulation, flush against the cable adapter. Using the supplied hex wrench, tighten each set screw only one or two turns at a time to ensure the collar remains centered over the insulation. Continue tightening the set screws until they are below the surface of the collar. Repeat this procedure for Cable 2.

  5. Splice Conductors

Thoroughly clean the ends of the cable adapters and the exposed cable conductors. Install a hose clamp around the adapter on the side opposite to where the housing is stored to hold the adapter in place during final assembly, then tape over the hose clamp to create a smooth surface. Wirebrush the exposed conductors of both cables and immediately insert them into the splice. Verify that the 'Check' dimension does not exceed 8-1/2 inches (215mm); if it does, redo the assembly. Crimp the splice according to its specific recommendations. Wipe off any excess inhibitor and recheck the distance between cable adapters. If it exceeds 8-3/4 inches (222mm), redo the assembly. Clean and lubricate the outside surface of the cable adapters before sliding the housing into its final position.

  6. Complete Joint Assembly and Grounding

Slide the joint housing into its final position, centering it over the cable adapters. Remove all temporary tape; ensure no cable or adapter insulation is exposed after positioning the joint. Reshape the shield wires and secure them to the ends of the joint. Insert one of the shield wires from Cable 1 (if #14 AWG or larger) through the joint grounding eye; repeat for Cable 2. If shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG, use a separate #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent. Connect the joint grounding wires and the remaining shield wires using an appropriate connector. Finally, reconstruct the cable jacket (if applicable) over both cables and over the joint housing using heat/cold shrink material (not included in the kit).
